Sorry to regurgitate this one but I have a question. Looking through my Haynes manual regarding oil and filter change I noticed on the pictures that the oil filter position looks as though it could be removed by lifting the engine cover and moving the rad top hose out of it,s clip. All the posts I have read suggest access from below. Today I had a look at seems possible. any one clarify this.

It is possible to get to the filter from above if you lift out the radiator fan assembly.  Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

I second that (GlynnB). I use a low profile ratchet handle that doesn't take up too much room as filter housing has to come back quite a bit. MY10 TD4 SE Auto

Yes. I did mine from the top also. But the filter has to come out through the bottom IIRC.

And it is so much better a procedure with the recommended 27mm adjustable ratchet ring spanner. I left plenty of skin and blood undoing the filter with a fixed spanner. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Very interesting comments. Thanks to all so far for your advice. Think I will invest in the cranked spanner and give it ago. Did not realise till I read the Haynes manual that it is advised to change oil and filter at 6month intervals, so worth the cost of the tool alone and the knowledge that the filter has been replaced. Mobile oil looks a fair price on the link above from Amazon.

The 6 month oil change is only for fl2 run in arduous conditions or moderate sulphur diesel. It can drop to 3 months between changes with high sulphur diesel but with the low sulphur diesel we get in the uk oil changes are every 12 months according to the JLR maintenance check sheet.

has any one used Smith and Alllen for their engines. Works out at about £30.00 for 6 litres including vat and delivery which seems good compared to branded oil.

I’ve used them for 20 ltrs of transmission oil for when I flushed the auto box on my Evoque. Good price, quick delivery. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
