Just completed the 10 year service on the Freelancer. Mileage not high but 10 years old.
Surprised at the good condition of the timing belt but looks like the gland on the water pump was on its way out as signs of leakage, so job well done.
Don't know how others have managed whilst doing this job but I took the bumper off to give better access and I still struggled.
Hardest part of the job for me was undoing the crankshaft pully bolt. It was so tight I thought I would cause some internal damage to the engine. There was so much thread lock on the bolt I had to fight it every single turn until it was out.
Anyway job done about £160 for all the kit.  Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

Just needed the locking pins and fly wheel locking tool. Think they were £27.  Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Forgot to mention I also removed the radiator fan assembly for better access.
Made changing the oil filter a doddle when the timing belt was done.  Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Importance of doing the cam belt, water pump, tensioner etc before disastrous failure has been sadly brought home to my neighbour. His immaculate TD4, same age as mine and same mileage was regularly serviced by a local garage who thought the belt etc "does not need changing yet" as only 90,000 miles.
Catastrophic seizure a few days ago - belt and pump failure wrecked the engine - beloved Freely now with the breakers as estimated cost of repair £6k ++ ...…...

I wonder if there is any come back on LR if a belt or pump or even haldex fails before it's due date if the car has been serviced exactly as specified under LR servicing schedules?

Although it had only done 90,000mls the belt change was overdue as it should have been done at 10 years. I did my belt at 132,000mls on a 4 year old car and it was still like new. Even if they were not changing a belt due to low mileage a garage should at the very least take the covers off and inspect the belt for wear /deterioration/oil contamination etc anything that might lead to a failure!

If Land rover have changed the changing of belt from 10 to 7 years as I think I read on here would a low mileage vehicle need it doing ? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

I would suggest that for piece of mind you inspect the belt to check on it`s condition. My wifes Nissan Juke belt which is recommended changed at 75,000mls failed at 36,000mls due to a misaligned fuel pump causing premature wear. This was a fault with a batch of Jukes at the time. If I had checked the belt when she first got the car I would have picked up on the condition of the belt and been able to change it before it failed. Luckily it was only a couple of hundred pounds and a few hrs of work to put right!

I hear what you are saying but the amount of work required to get to the belt to check it thoroughly is hellish. Once there you may as well change it. Cost of the Gates Power Grip kit with the water pump included was less than £90.

Hey gasman, where did you get the kit and engine locks? Mine is due next year (well, two years ago) so looking at DIY. Although I've only had my car a year it's a Dec 10 build. It has service book and service history but no way of seeing if the belt was changed at seven years - the books that came with the car have the ten year interval for the belt.

My son's Clio had a cam belt failure a few years ago and it was caused by the water pump failing and throwing the belt. I was talking to the mechanic that rebuilt the engine and he said that he had never seen an actual belt failure as all the ones he had done were due to failure of the water pump or the tensioners. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Very true, when we were testing belts and basically the entire belt run, we had an engine on a dyno and literally threw small stones and debris into the belt run while at max power, never had a belt fail completely, had a few close shaves though with torn cords and belt edge damage but the belt stayed intact. Regards
