FL2 whining noise after engine turned off...and flat battery

We've just bought a '13 HSE Diesel. 55k and very clean. Drove 2 hours home with no probs.

Day 2 morning was a trifle disrupted with a flat battery. Battery took charge ok-ish and new battery ordered. Tests showed that it takes several minutes before the current drain from the battery drops to ~10--20mA after double-locking.

Day 3 morning and voltage measured before trying to start Wink and all ok, so we dared to go out. When we got home we noticed that the high-pitched whine/whistle that you get for a while after the engine is switched off kept going on... and on... and on. So I unlocked, then ign on, then double-locked again and waited. And it kept whining. So I started the engine for a minute, then turned it off, double-locked and waited. And the whine went away after about 30s-ish. (And its a 'clean' whine/whistle (a bit like tinnitus !), no 'graunching')

Now that sounds like a nice intermittent fault to me, and given that on day 2 I measured up to 9A at times without the engine running, and a static draw of about 4A for quite a while, I'm guessing that 4A-ish constantly out of a half-shot 80Ah battery will result in a flat battery after leaving overnight. Not good when you live up in the Welsh hills Sad

Problem found maybe... but what's my solution ???
It a bit different to this thread https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic34717.html

Having measured the current drain yesterday while it was whistling, I am really concerned that it will flatten even a new battery in a day.
I'm not at all inclined to go to a garage and ask them to spend my money willy-nilly until they find something that's wrong Wink

It certainly sounds like you need a new throttle valve to me. The current draw will be down to the motor trying to keep driving the valve when it shouldn't, which in turn will result in stripped gears, which then make the graunching noise. I'm guessing you bought privately, so no sort of warranty? You could try unplugging the electrical connector to the valve & see if the current draw goes away, that would confirm it for you. New throttle valves are not silly money either, just annoying after only just buying it!

Finally found someone describing really similar occurrences:

Interesting that this thread has come back up. I am used to the usual shut-down whines and clicks from the throttle body but was surprised to hear the high pitched whine yesterday - a good hour and a half after the key had been taken out of the car! The car had been left unlocked and doors had been opened and shut various times over that period, so the car’s electrics perhaps had not gone into the deeper battery shut-down stage. The whine lasted long enough for me to open the bonnet to check that it really was coming from the throttle body and then clicked off while I was staring at it. Weird that it should try to check it’s flap position so long after the ignition last being on.

However, no-one has mentioned it flattening their battery.

My ‘13 SD4 does the same. Curious how this issue turned out for you in the end.

Interested if anymore info on this one as having my 2014 have a whine sometimes after stopping
Can stay on for ages.
Have locked unlock sometimes with success sometimes not. Haven’t been able to check current draw as yet but will do if it persists

Cheers

Try taking the throttle body out and cleaning it. If there are carbon deposits in there it could be preventing the butterfly from closing correctly, therefore the motor will be working harder to try and close it.
If you loosen it from the manifold. Three torx screws, two at the rear just loosen, and remove the front one. Just let it rest on the intercooler hose for observation.
Engine off butterfly should be fully open.
Put the key in and switch ignition on to position two, do not start the engine. Butterfly still fully open.
Have someone else switch the ignition off and observe the butterfly, it should close fully, then after a couple of seconds open fully again, then switch off.

Throttle body before and after cleaning. Mine was not too bad but much better after cleaning.
Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Don’t they all make that noise. Mine is now nine years old and has done it from new , the noise is as described like a high pitched whistle/ whining noise , I think it only does it after locking, but can’t swear to that .

They all do make the noise as the throttle body closes and re opens again but it should not be for an excessive length of time. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

But sometimes after doing something in garage etc walk past car and it’s still whining

My petrol Si4 makes a whining noise since day one. Maybe about 30 seconds until the car switches off through the various clicking noises. But it seams to be from the rear left corner. Got used to it so don't really notice. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

My ‘13 SD4 makes the same noise.
Sometimes it goes off after 30 seconds and sometimes 20 minutes later.

My previous Freelander also did the same thing.

They are pretty bad for going through batteries so it’s not a bad thing to have got a new one.
I try and keep mine charged up also when I remember.
