Just found this forum, Just scrapped my old and trusted Freelander 1 and now have an 08 plate freelander 2 GS. compared to the old car the headlights are appalling.

What is the best way to improve the lighting but stay road legal?

Better bulbs and check the alignment maybe? If not, look for a set of OE xenon headlamps from a later model. Very easy to fit and will only need a simple reprogram when fitted. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Shed load of threads on this already, but I've just replaced my bulbs with Osram Nightbreakers. H7 and H11. Definitely better, with whiter light, better spread and more distance, but still not on par with the more modern high end stuff. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎

Near the fog light switches there is a manual headlight up down adjuster, it may be all the way down ?

Personally I don't have any issues with the FL2 headlights.

That's because you have H7 bulbs rather than the HB3 bulbs that blow/explode if you fit anything greater than the light given off by a child's torch.  MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Hi if you got problem with lights best is to purchase genuine xenon ultima-120% them are really good and you will see improvement for sure on ebay them around 16-18 quit each. Also check your lamps for mat inside or outside sometimes aftermarket lightbulbs installed make interior lamp matt so that is affecting the transparency- if that is in the case there is the way how you can clean interior lamp ask me for details . The third thing to improve lights is to buy carbon dioxide and polish front of the lamp

Ok Ive got to ask - how and why do you polish with CO2 - in the solid state I presume - bit cold though Jules

HID headlamp upgrade kit made huge difference when I replaced my HB3 bulbs. Fantastic improvement for the price.

I'd think that the OP has reflector housings on a 2008, so probably not suitable for HID drop ins. Shame... your pics look great. I had them in my old car and was very happy with them.

Although those of us with the old style running H7's get OK light out of them. Would imagine a bulb replace should help if they're that bad.

And I'm glad someone else asked about CO2... thats been bugging me the whole drive to work this morning thinking about that!

Still waiting for a LED or HID that can give a good pattern in a reflector. Spent enough money trying to find some, so hoping someone will come along with photos of one that works soon. Would love to go back to HIDS.

He probably meant baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). I have seen video's were they use that to polish headlight.
