Fitted blanking plate 2 weeks ago and just removed due to strange noises on pulling away at low revs. Have EGR fault codes so been treating fuel system with Redex treatment to flush out system. Thought the blanking off would help the cleaning process. On removal plate already had sticky build up of the black stuff about 2mm thick. Will buy diagnostic tool soon to check if EGR still is still producing fault code because as on post earlier this morning MIL problematic. Out of interest photo shows the highest mog seen after fitting plate. 4 miles on cruise control at 50mph, flattish roads. Previously seen about 55mpg highest

egr blank

I have just blanked my EGR in my discovery 2 and cant really notice the difference yet as I have not drove it over any distance yet ,I am now due to change the timing belt on the FL2 as it has 200000k so I will blank the EGR at the same time as to my mind putting exhaust gas back through an engine is the equivalent of running a marathon with a fag hanging out of your mouth . also will check swirl valves (?) as I have heard of them being sucked through the engine and that removal makes no difference to performance 09 freelander

Even if the inert gas is being used to limit the temperatures in the combustion chamber to limit the production of harmful Nitrogen Oxides and as a by product, not exposing the valves and piston crown to excessive heat?

The EGR valve is the devil in Car nate Banging Head

Engines run perfectly well with clean air and fuel but the idea of introducing burnt exhaust gases back into the engine is very silly indeed.

Our 2014 SD4 has had the pesky EGR blanked and deleted from the ecu and at the same time a stage 1 remap done Thumbs Up

Pros-
Now cruises at 75mph at 1800rpm giving a 38mpg average.
220 BHP and 500nm torque gives effortless power and seems to have smoothed the autobox shifts.
No EGR faults or expensive repairs.
Cleaner better performing engine.

Cons-
None Very Happy

Top Gear in Bridport Dorset they write the map on site so not a one fits all generic cobblers.

Without doubt these improvements have made the SD4 the car it should have been to start with.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't tampering with the emissions be detected by the MOT station and consequently get you a fail?

The EGR delete does not affect the Emissions test for MOT it would only fail if it had been visibly tampered with or removed.

Do you have MOTs in Spain? 94 Disco 300 TDI Gone

MOTS in Spain

All countries in Europe have MOTs ... even Ireland. It's called an ITV in Spain.

Here it's first time after 4 years. Then every 2 years up to 10 years, then every year.

The cars have to pass very strict emissions tests, that's what would worry me.

During emission test, a blanked EGR will give you lower emissions.
And if there is no EGR related fault code logged, there is difficult for them to know (if nothing is obvious) that the EGR is blanked.
They don't have all cars/manufacturers parameters to know which air volume is entering the engine with and without EGR for making a comparison.

Why the snide 'even Ireland'? It’s a member state of the EU, just like Spain, so the same requirements apply, even if the application, i.e. frequency, varies.

2008 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Rimini Red

I’ve just removed the EGR blanking plate from my 2008 (non DPF) FL2 after 1000 miles or more. I had been concerned that fuel consumption was getting worse and a persistent resonance had developed in the 1500-1800 rpm range. I’ve only driven it about ten city miles since removing it but already the mpg is showing in the low 30s where it had been mid 20s before and the resonance has definitely been almost eliminated. The engine also seems more responsive.

No idea why I’m getting almost the opposite to what many others seem to have found after fitting the blanking plate but it clearly doesn’t improve my vehicle. YMMV!

I did about 100 miles today - half motorway, the rest A and B class roads. The engine is definitely smoother and quieter and fuel consumption into the low 30s after languishing in the mid 20s. Removing the blanking plate has certainly been the right choice. The car has 130,000 miles but the EGR valve had been replaced at 95,000.
