eco start or no eco start?

Hi All I'm new to the forum having bought my first FL2 (2012 XS Td4 Auto) 2 weeks ago. I'm hoping someone can clarify something for me. I've only done 300 miles so far but whilst sitting in a queue of traffic the other afternoon I'm sure the engine automatically began to stop itself as in stop/start fuel saving mode (which my wife's Polo has) or was it just stalling as I accelerated from stationary? The thing is that there's no 'eco' button anywhere on the dash so I'm wondering whether all FL2's have eco start and if they do do they all have a button on the dash so it can be disabled?

I hope the questions not confusing but it will be good if someone can help me get to the bottom of it.

Many Thanks

Glenn

Stop start only available with the manual gearbox which has a switch on the dash that turns it on and off. Having said that it is a rather temperamental system that is rather hit and miss in it`s operation. Big Cry

Dondiddy, I think you will find that the battery is the main problem with stop start not working correctly . Once the battery drops to about 80% capacity the stop start plays up. Another thing buying second hand is that batteries get changed by mechanics who put newer batteries on their car and prospective buyers end up with older ones .

Not just battery, but highly dependant on how much electrical stuff is running and also outside temperature.

Having said that, in two years of ownership, I think mine has only done the stop/start thing about a dozen times, with no clear logic of why then but not at other times. It seems to have happened as often at night in winter as on warm summer days, first thing in the morning or at the end of a long trip, and replacing the battery made no difference. Although with so few occurrences I guess I am short of having any real data to go on! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Bought my car at a year old from main dealer. Stop start seldom worked for five years. Decided to renew battery, and the stop start works under any conditions now. The battery must be an AGM type.

How do you stall a automatic?

My last 2 cars (Freelander manual and DS auto) both had stop start and they were both as hit or miss as each other, very random in when they would work. Could go for weeks on end without working then suddenly start working and would do so for the rest of the journey. Sometimes it would work within a few yards of setting off in the morning with a cold engine, could be working fine, stop for fuel and it did not work again after leaving the fuel station. Charging the battery made no difference to whether it would work or not. I now have a Disco 4 which has a separate battery for the stopstart and it works consistently. Thumbs Up

Had mine 6 and half years from new. 40 miles per day to work . Takes about 10 minutes to start working unless it’s been standing for a while, or it’s really cold and there’s all sorts of electric on. Battery related I reckon

Thanks for your comments everyone it's always a learning curve getting to know the idiosyncrasies of a new make/model. I now know that I could have eco stop/start function but the jury is still out as I don't have a button on the dash which would mean its a default function without the option to turn it on and off and that's a pain! So if anybody has the function without the 'eco' button please let me know. If on the other hand you know for sure that it can't have the function if there's no button, let me know also. And to you 'grumsel' I didn't mean that I thought I might have literally stalled the car but rather it felt like the car was about to stall! Sorry if that comment was non-sensical!

Thanks All

If it's an auto then you don't have stop/start it was never available on a Freelander 2 with autobox.
If you have a manual post 2011 MY (September 2010 onwards) then it will be fitted with stop/start and have an ECO button.

OK thanks so thats settled. The hesitancy the car was exhibiting as I put my foot on the accelerator in a traffic queue (which it hasn't done since) was something else. At least I know now.

it could that you have one of the early facelift FL2 and your suffering from the dreaded hesitation that has never been totally diagnosed.

have a search on here for hesitation and see what if any of the many threads match your symptoms.
