Rough running & reduced performance

I recently bought a 2010 Freelander 2 with 150k on the clock.

It has had a catalogue of problems that have resulted in rough running and a reduced performance message on the dash. Having read the numerous in formative threads on here, I have eliminated almost all of them.

1. Reduced performance under load, heavy acceleration etc. This was easily rectified by switching off and starting again, but would happen again under load. No smoke, funny noises or any other symptoms. I replaced the diesel filter (£30) with a new LR filter, bled the system and the problem was solved immediately.

2. Rough running and hesitation at approx 2,000rpm. Well documented here in this forum. I tried all the obvious things such as cleaning the MAF and MAP and all the induction pipes, checked for intercooler pipe leaks etc. I also fixed the air filter housing as the lid did not fit and air was by-passing the filter. None of these appeared to make any difference. Thanks to this forum, I eventually changed the throttle pedal assembly (£40) and the problem disappeared after a few minutes of the new throttle being used.

3. Very rough running when first started in the cold. I expect a bit of this with a diesel but it is extreme and I get white smoke if I use the throttle heavily. All is fine after a couple of minutes. I suspect glow plugs, but there are no Error Codes to suggest they have failed.

I hope this helps. Any thoughts on the cold start problems greatly appreciated - I have reread the threads on this forum which have made me wonder about the glow plugs.

All 4 of my plugs were open circuit. No messages ever. Started OK if a little slower when cold. Silver 2009 HSE

Completed the job. 8mm box spanner essential for reaching the plugs.
