They turn on when you turn on the rear window demister for about 5 minutes, then automatically they all turn off. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Exterior Mirror Heaters

Operation of the exterior mirror heaters is fully automatic and requires no input from the driver.

The exterior mirror heaters are active when the ambient air temperature is below 5°C (41°F) and engine coolant temperature is below 65°C (149°F). Ambient air and engine coolant temperature values are provided by the ECM on the high speed CAN bus. On receipt of these temperature values, the CJB determines if exterior mirror heating is required.

The CJB requests exterior mirror heating by transmitting a high speed CAN bus message to both the drivers and passenger door modules. The door modules provide feed and ground paths to the respective exterior mirror heating elements. When ambient and engine coolant temperature rises above the values stated earlier, the CJB transmits a high speed CAN bus message to the door modules cancelling the heating request

Now you fine gents have me curious, does this method described just above above also work for a NA model 2008 LR2SE? I actually thought my side mirror defrost was also activated by the rear window defroster.

Probably depends on MY and specification. My 2007 TD4 mirror heaters also work with the rear window demister.

As the cct diagram only shows the exterior door mirror heater wire only going back to the Door Module, where it is controlled by the CAN bus, it is hard to know how it is programmed to work. The Central Junction Box has access to lots of information from sensors and switches around the car.

My door mirrors seem to automatically, and clear quickly. It seems magic and I am happy to believe that. (until they go wrong!) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Down under it generally doesn't get cold enough to see if it automatically turns on. I think the mirrors are more likely to warp from heat! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
