Just an update. Having had the dink sound for a couple of years, I've had to start chasing down a whine from the rear. So I pulled fuse FB6 finally, and lo and behold the dinking has disappeared. Refit the fuse and it's straight back again. I've topped up with haldex oil (using correct procedure) and it has not changed the dink at all.

I noticed this "Dink" sensation a while back, and assumed it was something handbrake-related, as I too got it when rolling forward after being reverse-parked in a parking space.
If I remember correctly, it also didn't matter whether drive was being taken-up or whether holding a slow speed in first gear.
Perhaps it's just normal...

HOWEVER... I don't think it would be related to the "clunk" I get when changing gear from 2nd to 3rd and release the clutch.
It's not 100% of the time either, but no matter how gingerly I release the clutch, it can be there and sometimes sounds worse than on other occasions.
THIS sounds like drive being taken-up or play in splines... but where?
I had my haldex oil serviced back in January and that had no effect.  "We're in danger, we've got to get out."

I have this "dink noise" too. Removed the Haldex fuse and noise gone. Seems to be the initial take up when moving off. As I have no physical history on a Haldex service its booked in with Bell Engineering in November. I'll report back when done to see if this cures mine or if they can diagnose it if it doesn't.

I’ve looked into this before and it is the tiny amount of play in the prop uj bearings . By disabling haldex you remove the load on the prop hence no ding when haldex disabled .

Had this issue, a light dink when changing from forward to reverse directions and back, it was the driveshafts and is a known issue to LR.
First thing they try is to remove and Locktite the splines but this failed.
Had new driveshafts and hubs fitted under warrantee, would have cost around £4k in 2015.
Problem solved.

Well I took a trip out to see Austen at Bell Engineering ( http://www.bellengineering.co.uk/ ) yesterday and he carried out a service on the haldex and changed the rear diff oil too.

First off I couldn't be more happy with the service he provided and the knowledge and advice he gave. If you have any questions regarding the driveline on your Freelander then he is definately the man to talk to. He checked all the possible issues Diff bearing, PTO splines etc and found no problems.

Secondly I haven't had the "Dink Noise"since.

Having spoken at length to Austen and now experienced his professional service I won't hesitate in recommending him. Its well worth the journey!
