IRD Unit

Hello all, new poster here.I have been informed by LR main dealer that my 2010 GS (manual) needs a replacement IRD unit as I have been experiencing a whining noise whilst driving - is this something that needs to be done as a matter of urgency?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

The IRD on my 2012 car was making a dreadful noise for the best part of 10,000 miles.
It got much worse and louder the further I went.
Changed it eventually, oh what a difference.
That was around 110,000 miles and it’s now up to 130,000 and all is well and silent.Even the rear diff is behaving itself😂

Just to try and avoid future confusion, the term IRD was used originally on the FL1 and the similar front differential unit on the FL2 is referred to as Power Transfer Unit (PTU) in the JLR workshop manual and Transfer Case in the Haynes manual. Jules

Thanks for the replies and apologies for the incorrect terminology- it was stated as the IRD Unit on the advisory.

if a LR Main dealer is referring to the PTU in a FL2 as the IRD then i would be very very concerned about their lack of knowledge !!!

i know they will have farmed the MOT out to an 'independent' local test station who may well be confused (even though they shouldnt be) but the LR dealer service department should have noted that FL2 doesnt have IRD

I would get a 2nd opinion, preferably from Austen at Bell Engineering (plenty of recommendations for him on this forum)
