Buying Used FL2 in Autocar (now with link)

Update from mattmjones
I think the same article is now online at autocar.co.uk for anyone who fancies a quick read:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-ca...eelander-2

This weeks Autocar magazine has an article on buying used FL2s.

The writeup and observations seem quite reasonable.

They say that (set against today's cutely styled SUVs) the FL2 looks tough and ready for a dose of hard work.

In their expert's view they talk of the need to do oil changes regularly and use quality oil. Interestingly he says that the Haldex needs oil and filter every 20,000 miles.

Also he says that the FL2 to very sensitive to tyre condition, quality, and wear, and damage can occur if the FL2 believes it has will slip at high speed and engages 4 wheel drive.

Otherwise the FL2 is reliable and nice to own.

A quote that I agree with-----
"One specialist regards it as a mini Range Rover; it's that comfortable and capable" FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Bit extreme to service, Haldex, every 20000. I changed fluid and filter at 52000 and both weren't that dirty.
Thanks for the flag up on, Autocar, I'll try and get a copy.

They’re right about the tyres as well... I’ve just changed all four of mine a thousand miles or so earlier than I really needed to, like for like replacements all round, and it drives much more nicely, including in the rain this week! Lexus RX450H - 500 mile a week commuter- I just couldn’t trust in a newer RRS or DS for that….
2009 Freelander 2 HSE... 155K miles, we’ve done 135k of those, has done brilliantly on the commute and staying firmly put as car two in the household
2002 Jaguar XK8 Coupe... fun, fast, ours for 12 years and owes us nothing - so staying with us too…

I believe 20k miles is the manufactures recommendation.

IIRC

LR recommendation for the Haldex is 150k i believe

Every other manufacturer that uses a Haldex set up recommends 40-45k

Looking around Vehicle manufacturers tend to quote 10k, 20k, 40k,50k,60k or never for Haldex oil changes. There is a Volvo Service Training Guide pdf about which states 20k miles is recommended for the oil change interval.

Not sure what generation this one is.

Quite a positive artical overall, good to see residuals holding up reasonably well, probably due to the fact, JLR, hasn't made a direct replacement. Will not be changing mine any time soon. Might look at changing the rear tyres sooner rather than later. Definatley will be going for the, Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2, to match the front, as very impressed so far with good noise levels.

Due to my old age I cannot fathom out why they tested a LHD UK registered FL2 Laughing Regards
