In a continuing saga of whats gone rusty now, is the rear towing eye (I think thats what it's called).




Anyone got any ideas what this part is called? or has a part number? and more importantly, how easy is it to get off and replace?

Im thinking about getting it sand blasted and then painted, but it might be simpler to get a new one.

I thought they were lashing eyes for when it’s on a transporter,maybe the car has spent some time by the sea ?

Pretty sure it is the towing eye. From what I remember of mine it is welded on. Wire brushed and Hammerited mine with Silver. Pretty good match. Silver 2009 HSE

It will go rusty , as indeed will anything else’s under the car . but it will still do it’s job in 20 years time . If you can’t live with it use phosphoric acid or any Phosphoric based rust converter such as Hammerite Kurust . I wouldn’t bother painting it myself As soon as you put a shackle through it to either tow or lash the vehicle to a recovery truck, the paint will be gone . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I've always known them as lashing eyes, as they are not rated for towing,
but then as a quick get you out of the sh*t they would be fine.....unless it's gone rusty

The “ eyes “ are ok for let’s say regular , and gentle towing . I’ve pulled more than a few vehicles using that rear loop . What I wouldn’t be doing is using it as an anchor point for a kinetic rope recovery . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

There is one eye at the front (behind panel) and one at the rear and the manual refers them as "TOWING EYES"

It’s a towing eye, and it is rated for towing the vehicle or being towed (for example a breakdown tow), usually lashing the vehicle down on transporters etc slots under the vehicle are used, the lashing strops have hooks on which slot into the points under the vehicle, at least that’s the official way on multi vehicle transporters, we always rated the eyes at well over GVW in fact when the Mondeo came out and the press slated it for being damaged in rear impacts and the floor crumpling (as it was supposed to) as compared to the Cortina which was stiffer and looked intact but in fact damaged more of the vehicle, we arranged a press day in which we actually lifted a Mondeo with a crane on just the rear towing eye, it spun slowly while the press ate humble pie, but oddly that day never quite got the publicity the crumpling did  Regards
