Why would you do this?

Perhaps it's because I'm an old'un and do don't Facebook and Twitter so unappreciative of what these social sites are truly like, but was taken back by a news item on line today.
Bottom line, a couple were on holiday in Tanzania and part of their accommodation had an underwater viewing area. He swims outside and proposes to her through the glass. She accepts and posts images and her acceptance on Facebook.
He never submerged. She then subsequently updates her Facebook entry to say he'd died whilst proposing to her.
I'm sorry, but why on earth would you do that?

WTF?? (That's yoof speak for What The Falkirk). FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

"He never submerged". How did he swim under the viewing area then ?
Only kidding, I know it was meant to say "emerged".
You see , the "live my life on line" crowd tend to be a bit dim. They value themselves by how many likes or followers they have. Being popular is everything.
Tanzania has many crocodiles and hippo's, both of which kill man. Both spend a lot of their time under water.
But this guy's romantic gesture was more important than his personal safety. But then again, the danger of his futile gesture probably never crossed his mind.
The internet is full of these self obsessed , self serving morons. Many of whom have died for a thumbs up !
I'm afraid that Darwinism strikes again.
