I think my rear diff is on it's way out. I am getting a low frequency drone, started yesterday. Does that sound right or should it be a high pitch whine?

Drone could well be diff. Last time it had an oil change?

Can also be caused by tyre wear. How much tread on them? (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I had a drone a few years back and rotated tyres which stopped the noise. I have had another drone/ wine noise that has confounded me for the last 80,000kms and I'm not sure its the diff, clutch assembly, wheel bearing or tyres, its tough to zone in on it without chassis ears. At 230,000kms I don't really care either.

I have had rear diff. rear wheel bearings and tyre drone and they all sounded the same to me. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Well took Florrie back to dealers after my Scotland trip as wheel slip still there along with drone also jerking gears when changing.
Engineer jumped in car for drive around and agreed with slipping and noise, he then comes back and said he had bled and primed the new Haldex also an update for rear diff ??????
Bloody service girl talking over him didn't help but I too polite to tell her to shut up ( that will change )so didn't get it all.

Anyway been trying Florrie when cold as instructed and gear shift feels tighter but still very slight slippage and noise seems more pronounced!!

Any ideas before I head back for another 64 mile round trip please.! If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

There are no electronics of any sort in the rear diff - its purely mechanical (no sensors , no CPU etc). So no update for the rear diff.

The Haldex, however, is electronic; has its own oil pump and controller and throws error codes when poorly.
I also thought that the only way to empty/bleed the Haldex of its oil was to unbolt it from the front of the rear diff (but you need to take the prop shaft off first to do that.) Its not a 10 min job.

Personally I wouldnt be happy with his explanations. Jules
