Shape of FL2

Westville recent deliberations on what to chose post-FL2 got me thinking what is it that I like about the shape of my car.

Recently a couple of SUVs parked alongside my car.

The Ford Kuga and Skoda Kodiaq do not have the same look or feel of the seemingly 'GO Anywhere' upright FL2.

Most SUVs have a much lower driving position with poorer vision out of the much smaller windows.

I have just had a DS as a loan car, and I thought it had a kind of estate car on stilts feel about its driving position.

The only modern car that matches the FL2 driving position seems to be RRS, but that is way more expensive.

Is there another SUV with the same command driving position? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

You missed the D3/D4, its interior is styled around the 'command' driving position, but not just the driver/passengr, but also both rows of back passenger seats.
Though it is higher than the FL2, so maybe not ideal for those adverse to heights. Laughing

The FL2 is still the best styling in comparison to todays Euro/Asian SUV "curvy" styling FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Slightly off topic, but one of those spaces is marked Disabled. Where do you live that grants spaces to people called Anabel? Rolling with laughter

Back on topic, I agree with you entirely, the FL2 does have a shape that suggests it's been made for a purpose. There's a couple of the newer SUVs crept into the works car park over the past few months that look 'okay' but when you hear the doors or boot shut, there's nothing solid about them, the dash looks blingy . . . I suppose they'll be people that'll argue mines not used to its full potential and that's an argument difficult to refute, most of the time. However we go to relatives in Switzerland, and for that it comes into its own. And it was bought to cater with my dodgy hip, knee etc

I agree, the upright shape of the FL2 gives it a more 'rugged' look than the newer SUVs. I recently had a DS on loan for a couple of days and I was relieved to get my FL2 back as I find the seating position far more comfortable, especially with dodgy back and knees. I even find my better halves Volvo XC60 less comfortable. I told the LR dealership that I would only consider buying a DS if I could swap the seats over Rolling Eyes. I've yet to drive a D3/D4, but the look still hasn't grown on me. -------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s my Dynamic next to an XS. The body styling pack and coded door mouldings and d pillars change the whole appearance of the car.

I would never have guessed Wink

Laughing

But on the original topic, indeed I believe the FL2 still bears the original design DNA from LR, maybe the soon coming Defender will be a little better in this respect.

Otherwise we’ll all be driving “jelly mould” 4x4s Sad

Neighbour has latest Lexus RX.....ugh......we had a Mk1 RX for 10 years, at least that was 4x4 shaped (in a Japanese way) the latest looks like a kid with a phone app styled it..... Regards

I have tried sitting in several similar sized SUVs lately, and I have noticed that, compared with the FL2, the rear seats seem low, claustrophobic, with small window areas. Not very nice.

Also the sloped roofs also make it hard to see much out the back. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

to me squarer shapes for 4x4s (or should that be SUVs) and estates suit them better. The modern curvy, bulbous style with higher window lines and smaller glass areas don't fit with what the cars intended purpose, they now seem too over styled.
Currently I think the VW Passat estate has managed to retain Its DNA well and still be good looking yet practical.
Whilst recently browsing round cars the closet to a FL2 was the Volvo XC70, but they don't make those anymore either, which seems to be the trend.

I don't think the modern Land Rover style will endure the same way, which was brought to mind when I snapped this outside a neighbours.

Although to my eyes Gerry has done quite well recycling some of his FL1 styling Laughing

Haven't tried any older Discoveries but haven't found anything as comfortable and nice driving position of Freelander 2 .

VW Transporter is nice height but not as comfy.
