Kick Down

Can the Kick Down feature be dissabled?.

I find it sometimes engages when I dont need it.
I dont think I have been in a situation where I need it, especially when towing.

I believe all auto boxes kick down, a way to lessen it is maybe to gently accelerate but you will probably still get the kick down at some point

I always thought kick down was flooring the throttle to get a quick burst of speed by rapid down change.

Yup. The term dates back to the days when auto boxes typically had only three gears (and thus large steps between them) and much more basic control systems. Cars would have a switch at the limit of the accelerator's travel and activated by firm pressure on the pedal (a kick) which would force the box to change down a gear - to kick down - in situations where it otherwise might not. The idea was that the box wouldn't force a change if one opened the throttle with normal pressure, but would if one kicked it.

The only way to get around it is to accel gently, but even sometimes (going uphill or towing) it’s going to happen, shouldn’t be to severe though, if it is a real jolt get the oil level checked in the box. Regards

I find that the Auto FL2 changes down too readily when accelerator is pressed. The engine has a lot of torque and could handle quite a decent rate of acceleration at a lower engine speed. Perhaps they should have given us an 'ECO' mode switch.

Most times the automatic change down and increase of speed when resuming 'Cruise Control' is far greater than is required in the circumstances.

Having said that, the FL2 is quite sprightly, once it is underway, and surprises many people. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

There is a form of kick down adjustment, that is to use the manual mode, the car will stay in the higher gear much longer and only change when the engine can no longer hold speed in cruise control or when the engine will no longer produce the power to accelerate the car reasonably. I used that system towing mainly on the continent as in normal or sport it kicked down on the slightest gradient, it will always kick down, however once kicked down it needs a shift to change up. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

In the old days it used to be via a micro switch under the throttle pedal, with modern technology I assume it is via software either throttle position or engine speed/load. Regards
