Sorry everyone but a little embarrassed for asking this. Being an older person I use my iPhone (think it's the 6) for little more than making calls, texts etc. What's the easiest way to charge it in the car? Been into search and gather its through the USB point in the centre console but this is where I'm confused - do I need buy a special cable/charger for this, or does the cable that fits into the iPhones indoor 3-pin plug do the job; I'm of the impression this cable either isn't suitable or recommended for in-car use and I need a dedicated lead. It's only very very occasionally it'd be used as I try and keep the phone charged at home.

believe the newer phone are the same (have 5s) but our cable is fine un-plug from the mains adp and it can plug into any usb port (or the 12v socket with an adp)
we transfer photos to the laptop this way, charge via the usb in the car and charge in the tintent via a 12v to usb adp

the car may ask you about your music, can not remember if our does or not as we use the 12v socket with an adp, not the usb port

In our 09 there is not a USB port . I just use a 12 v cigar lighter socket to USB adapter, and a spare Apple lightening cable . I didn’t pay apple’s silly prices , I bought both from the stands near the tills in TK Maxx . Maybe the USB port in the car is only 1A, whereas a lot of the mains chargers are now 2A+ to cope with the needs of newer phones and tablets.

You can buy a 12V USB plug that will output over 2A Steve

SteveC is correct the USB port is really only designed to be a data port rather than a charging point, you can pick up a cigarette lighter adapter very cheaply as MartynB suggests but make sure that it has an output of at least 2amps. MY13 HSE Lux Santorini Black Gone

I've got a small camera & it tried to connect to the car but would rarely charge so I got a 12v adaptor.

I've gone through a few of these 12v to USB adaptors as some didn't want to charge every piece of equipment either via the car or my own 12v system. They seem to be a bit temperamental. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
