‘Orrible scraping noise suddenly from wheel rotation.....

Took the neglected thing out today for bread and milk (for me, not the FL2) and going up our very steep lane which has a couple of little speed bumps (private lane, speed bumps are tarmac short sharp shockers) and I swear I heard a “doink/choink/boinnngg” from going over one of the bumps, then it started making this nasty scraping noise, pretty sure it’s not pad displacement as when braking there is no change in the sound at all, just continuous scraping, I fear it may be a bit of back plate (they are very rusty and weak) fallen between the plate and disc, doesn’t quite sound like a stone, not constant enough, more Metallicy/bitty sound.

I’ll pop it along to the local greasy spanner man soon, but wondered if corroded back plates are an issue sometimes on the FL2?

Tried the search, not found anything significant. Regards

David

I had a scraping noise after a bit of off-roading. Turned out that a heatshield had bent and was rubbing on the driveshaft. Was so annoying I had to stop and work out the noise source and sort it.
No problems with the disc backing plates on my 12 year old FL2.

Could you not just take the wheel off and have a look before you risk another journey ?

If it is a bent back plate then it should bend back failr easily. But it may be something more serious. Jules

Unfortunately I can no longer physically wield spanners and hammers.....so it’s up to the garage, it’s only 1/4 mile if that and it’s single lane very slow stuff. Regards

It was from op-north until a few months ago so not from our Sea air, well not yet anyhoo.....quite a bit of underside surface rust but nothing structural, the FL2 appears pretty good in that respect.

The front back plates are very rusty and can be bent and bits broken off if forced Shocked ......as above it might be a shield dragging on rotating parts, we’ll see. Regards

Could be a broken spring catching. I had one go on a speed bump. Not good for rugged off road machines. Silver 2009 HSE

Right, got the FL2 up to the garage today, unfortunately as I turned around on the drive in reverse the sound suddenly stopped (I had been in reverse before to try and dislodge a stone, just in case but it persisted), anyhoo dropped it off anyway and picked up later and he had been over it very carefully, all he could find was a totally corroded forward exhaust bracket which no longer was connected to anything (exhaust will need replacing soon as it is very rusty), as for the noise nothing was found, it drive silently and no evidence of anything untoward.......so....... rusty exhausts are the norm for FL2, they are stainless steel which should last for longer than the rest of the car so make sure its not just surface rust making it looking scabby
