Retro Fit Apple TV. Is It Possible?

Hi there,

I have read and seen recently on the likes of YouTube that BMW owners are fitting Apple TV units to their cars multimedia screen. This then enables them to mirror their iPhone, a lot like apple car play but also gives them all the Apple TV apps.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffg-8WVQy7c

Now I'm not that clued up on either the workings of the Freelander touchscreen system or the Apple TV device but for anybody that is, I thought you might like the inspiration, if you haven't thought of it already.

Would be a great way to bring the Freelander up to date.

Knowing nothing about this, I’d say absolutely same chance as finding Trump at a LGBT rally Rolling with laughter Regards

Most things are possible with effort and money.
Im sure a modern ICE installer would be able to assist you. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I imagine you'd need a head unit with an HDMI input at the bare minimum. Then it'd just be a matter of WiFi and power which wouldn't be an issue. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

If you don't mind replacing the satnav (if fitted) then you can use one of these:

I had a non satnav for my first FL2 about 8 years ago and put one of these screens in the satnav hole and had a Mac mini running CentraFuse in-car software in the boot... Current: FL2 TD4 2008 HSE

I personally wouldn't go to the hassle of replacing the head unit just for Apple Car Play, some others might. Freelander 2 XS 2013

You can only (legally) watch TV while stationary anyway, so how many times are you going to need/want to watch TV while parked?

I know when we had the FFRR with TV up front and in head rests also we used it once to show our daughter when she visited then it never got turned on again.

I understand the rear headrest viewing for kids in the back on long journeys but otherwise...hmmm Regards

David

Oh I know that, I've never even watched a DVD in the car except for the purpose of testing out the feature for a couple of minutes when I first got the car.
I've only suggested the use of Apple TV as a cheap alternative to acquiring Apple Car Play in your car. In the case of BMW owners they would be charged a couple hundred annually for the subscription of Apple Car Play, so somebody has found a way to install an Apple TV unit into their which then allows for screen mirroring of your iPhone to effectively give you what Car Play is. Freelander 2 XS 2013

There’s more than 2 options available for Carplay on IAM2.1 search Xcarlink or Navtool.
Better still unlike the BMW solution which is just “mirroring” the LR version is fully functional from the touchscreen. MY15

Just to extend the topic. It's fairly easy to install Apple TV's for rear entertainment. I have them in mine linked to the original LR rear entertainment screens.
