Don't think a diesel car can backfire and damage its catalyst. Backfires only happen if fuel in inlet manifold.

Freddy how can you even suggest going back to plugs and points.
They were c**p. Always fusing/pitting/needing adjustment.

ECU's are great when they work, but I think information should be more accessible.
Perhaps we might move to internet protocol IP addresses in ECU's in the long term, thus allowing us all to connect to our cars with laptops and see whats going on.

I work in air conditioning/building services, and many manufacturers of A/c systems are going this way.

Just a thought!!

Quite a number of years ago, I remember seeing a supercar on Top Gear or something that had a built-in modem, so if you were having problems, you just plugged in a phone line (I guess you would use an extension lead!), and a technician could interrogate/tweak the system remotely. They even demonstrated by activating the car's windscreen wipers over the phone!

Oh I’m just reminiscing about all those Saturday & Sunday afternoons spent out in my garage under an XR3, Golf GTi or my mates MKII Escort, tinkering about. Listening to Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, New Order, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, ABC…………………

Anyone remember “Hot Car” magazine ??

My fav mag of the day, just loved looking at the Kamei Kits & BBS rims for GTi’s. Never did get a Kamei kit myself though Sad

Loved the comparison tests, such as the XR3i against the GTi or the RS1600i against the XR3i. Or the project cars they built, MG Metro is one that sticks out in my mind for some reason Surprised

Pure brilliant stuff really, there’s just nothing like it any more.

Don’t even get me started on the TV shows of the day……..Magnum, Miami Vice, Simon & Simon……………..

Ah Ok, just pulled myself back to the “noughty’s again, sorry about that Rolling Eyes

Those were the days though, fun times, not a care in the world & great music Thumbs Up “You feel uneasy, as the mad scientist locks the door behind you & dissolves the key in a vat of Acid”

Ah yes, I think I remember something about that alright Mark Thumbs Up

I just noticed that I omitted a few TV shows from my list above,

Mac Gyver
The Fall Guy

& of course……… Knight Rider………”Go HOFF Go !”

BTW apologies for essentially hi-jacking a thread about running out of fuel in our FL2’s & turning it into a 70’s / 80’s reminiscing thread Whistle “You feel uneasy, as the mad scientist locks the door behind you & dissolves the key in a vat of Acid”

No problem Freddy

80's reminising is much more entertaining than running out of fuel.

Not familar with "Mac Gyver" though - what was that.

Can't deny its still good to see the HOFFmiester after all these years. Saw an old Knight rider the other day, and brought it all flooding back.

Thumbs Up
