Mileage vs Age

Hi All

I'm new to the site but I've been lurking a little while.

Considering buying a FL2 but I've only got about £6-£7,000 to spend at max.

I live in a rural area and have to use my own car regularly for work so I need something a bit capable on Berkshire's finest country roads.

Most recent advice I've had is to buy as new as I can, and not to worry about the mileage so long as it's had minimal (1-2) owners and a decent service history... is that the general consensus on here?

I'm not fussy about spec, just curious where you'd spend your money? I've seen low mileage 2007 models in my budget but a few 2013s with 130-150k

We bought my wifes Fl2 which is an 07 in 2013 at 6 years old and 109k , it had just had a new rear diff fitted . In the 6 years we've had it other than wear and tear items and consumables it has been one of if not the most reliable vehicle we've had . A 1 or 2 owner Fl2 with a good service history should serve you well . The wifes that attached to hers she's very reluctant to change it , even for one of the last Fl2's .

That's encouraging.

2010 was the change over year to the TD4e am I right?

There's a good few those about for around £6,000 with circa 100,000 miles. So a 1 owner FSH one of those should do me well for a few years you reckon?

Remember they are due a big service at 10 years which can prove costly unless the owner has spread the work over the last year or so . Remember also they come fitted with a Dpf from 2010 on , I would buy on condition and history and wouldn't let mileage be a deal breaker . Good luck in your search .

Big service now reduced to 7 years. I wonder why?? Crap inferior parts likely to fail before 10'years, or helping to/assisting propping up the dealer network? You decide....

The TD4e was from Model Year 2010, so you can get this on a 59 plate. I got mine (59 plate) 18 months ago in your price bracket, with 79,000 on the clock. I’ve had 35,000 essentially trouble-free miles with it since. Things are probably simpler with a pre-DPF model, but at some point we will be banned from an increasing number of locations with it 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Thanks for all the above, I'm still looking for the right one...

Now I'm torn between auto and manual so, considering I'm probably going to end up in something with say 120/130k on the clock.

What's the better gearbox?

The auto, especially if you are planning on towing and / off roading Thumbs Up

I’ve owned two manuals and one auto. I fought off owning a manual for many years and then was forced into one and found that it suits the car so much more than the manual ever did!

The auto gives you access to the higher powered diesels, it avoids the fragile clutch (which can start to burn very easily when manoeuvring a trailer off road) and the creep facility helps to make up for the lack of low range.

Is anyone thinking of selling based in Berkshire?

I'm looking at a 2011 HSE auto with 130,000 miles, FSH and 2 previous owners in Slough on for £7.5k
But being a HSE, I think it's on 18" wheels (I'd prefer 17s so I can get AT tyres)

I'm in no rush to buy really so if a members car comes up that would be preferable

Wouldn’t let the wheels put me off a good HSE. There’s loads of 16’s and 17’s on EBay and gumtree, maybe needing a refurb. Then there’s always someone looking for the bigger wheels. Should break even minus new tyres of course or even make a small profit.

Would you buy a "Twin Tub Washing Machine"? My son has 2007 160,000 miles box still smooth, changed fluid @ 130, 000.

Like with most cars, how well it's been looked after is the major factor. Look for one that has a lot of service history and has been serviced at a land rover garage.

There are differences with the later models, earlier problems had been fixed. I can't remember exactly what they are, other more knowledgeable members will tell you.

This isn't a car to run on a budget, the running costs surprise some.

Also, I don't think it's that fun to drive on country roads, there's a lot of body roll in the corners.

If you're going to use it for what it's designed for - light off roading, towing etc then go for it. Otherwise I'd recommend something Japanese that's cheaper to run and is nicer to drive on twisty roads.
