Suspected hole in coolant reservoir, but not?

Hello,

I got a warning on my dash saying "Coolant level low", I thought fine and topped it up. A week later I got the same warning and began to get worried.

Once home I tried to top up again, but spotted some liquid underneath the reservoir, so filmed when I poured the coolant in, and realised (I think) that it was pouring straight back out of the hole circled below:

However when I go to buy a new reservoir it seems they all contain this (potential) hole? Am I going mad?

Ebay examples:

EDIT: This is what happens when I pour the coolant in:

Would really like your thoughts on this!

Interesting, mine has a hole too(MY 2014).

The hole is at the end of a moulded vertical tube which meets the black upper part and continues through it and up to a hole under the lip of the screw-down filling cap.
The top of the "tube" appears to be well above the max level of coolant.
I think, maybe, its an over-pressure escape.

Maybe yours has separated where the white and black plastic parts are joined. Jules

Ahh Jules that actually does make a lot of sense, and will explain why I still get pressure. I'll order a new one from eBay and get it fitted.

Thanks for your response and the detailed explanation of how it works!

Also I guess if you refill too quickly some fluid might run around the lip and down the "tube" but I cant see it being as much as in your video.

If you look down your small hole on the lip/ sealing rim you can see ones finger tip when placed over the hole at the bottom. Jules

Turns out the EGR cooler was cracked, or at least was leaking fluid which we think is where the low coolant is coming from.. will report back next week when my wallet is considerably lighter! For Sale: 2012 Freelander 2 GS (https://www.freel2.com/forum/post431941.html)
