People sometimes forgot that the Freelander 2, under normal road conditions, is not permanent 4WD but in fact only FWD. So having slightly different tyres on the rear axle should not cause an issue because there is no direct mechanical link between front and rear axles until the Haldex clutch locks up.

In a permanent 4WD (like Defender, Disco 1 & 2) there is a mechanical centre differential permanently coupling front and rear axles - this will wear more if different tyres on on the axles. Jules

Indeed, the noise I had was nothing to do with transmission (although it sounded like it) but uneven wear of tyres on the rear.

I assume the all wheel drive system accentuates any noises from the rear as obviously the rear diff etc still rotate and do a job even though power is going through to the front wheels 99% (or insert your own guesstimate) of the time. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Yes, the prop is constantly turning whether or not the Haldex has engaged to drive power to the rear or not. Confusing, but it was always described as permanent 4 wheel drive when it in fact isn't...its active on-demand.
