2007 freelander 2 engine oil leak :-(

Good morning all,
I have a 2007 freelander 2 with around 105k on the clock and it appears to have an oil leak but not too sure what the part is that its leaking from or how to go about repairing it. I've dropped the undertray off and it you are looking at the car front on, I can see oil dripping from the right hand side of the engine opposite the oil sump and after the pipe that runs to the turbo.
I’ve found a picture online https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/10/876.jpg
I cleaned it all up but after a quick spin round the block I can see oil appearing between the two bolted sections on the lower part of the above picture.
(It had a new clutch and flywheel in December, so I’m wondering if its related to that, or a seal's gone somewhere)
any advice greatly appreciated
thanks
Craig

Hi Craig and welcome! Looks to be the rear crankshaft oil seal which is kind of bad news as it means taking the gearbox out to get at it. It is not that uncommon at higher mileages and although the seal is cheap enough there is a lot of labour involved in getting at it! Basically all the work that was done when you got the new clutch and flywheel has to be undone to get at the seal! Big Cry

Many thanks, didn’t think it looked like an easy fix when I was under it yesterday. In a dilemma now whether to get it fixed or just sell it as is. The cars done me well for 4 years, but over the last 6 months its had the full service/clutch/flywheel/master cylinder/new brakes/new tyres and starting to think its costing more that the cars worth.
The cars got a warranty with the clutch - so guessing thats not related to the leak? - different part of the engine?
I’m guessing trying to temporarily seal it with sealant to stop it dripping on the drive won’t work?

I have never used it myself but Lucas oils do a stop leak product that is added to the engine oil. I have had friends who swear by the Lucas product for automatic gearboxes and online reviews seem very positive. Might be worth a try. Sealant won`t work as you can`t get to the bit that is actually leaking as the seal sits higher up the engine then where the oil is actually running down and appearing at the bottom. personally I would do the job properly with a new seal but can understand your dilemma over what to do regarding repair, temp repair or sell!

nothing to lose by speaking to the garage that did the clutch replacement and trying the ''it wasn't leaking before you worked on it'' discussion.

its could be they nipped the seal, or didn't do something quite right and they may agree to either a no cost strip and replace seal or at least meet you part way on costs.

I think most places charge around £250 for a gearbox removal/refit + the cost of parts. so you could be looking at about £280 all in to replace the seal in a worst case scenario

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
Interesting way of thinking....
Sorry for saying/asking and I could be ignorant, but is this (morally) correct/normal way of proceeding?

Just had mine done by an independent. 6 hour job cost me £600. The seal itself is only around £11 on it's own.............. it can be replaced in half a minute.

just to add to the problenms, today i've had a message come up on the display "Terrain Function Faulty" - Big Cry
Ordered up some of the Lucas oil additive to see it that helps, but i think we've decided to off the car to the local garage in part-x for something else.
