I am confused everything I have read says new tyres go on the back.

Explained further up the thread perfectly, nothing to do with tyre blow out control, just far safer to have the tyres with better grip at the rear than the front, put simply it is easier for “Joe Bloggs” to control understeer rather than oversteer. Regards

Umm always thought new tyres on front?? Heyho. Anyway sorry chaps and chapesses but might be silly question but do you take tyre depth from in tread or from the little blocks built in around tyre please

If you look at the shoulder of the tyre you will see little letters "TWI" which indicate where the Tread Wear Indicator "bump" is moulded across the tread, take your measurement from next to the bump within the tread, then you know you're measuring in the correct place. Regards

I remember a friend bringing his new (to him) car to show me (a Ford Escort) we decided to check the tyre pressures. I was on one side and said what pressure is it supposed to be for a 145 tyre? response from the other side "no they are both 155 on this side" Oh Oh....... Turned out that the dealer had another Escort with tyres that didn't match too. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Scorpion zero with 4mm all corners where's the cheque book seems a good idea to get three new tyres and stick the spare on If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Another reason for Joe Public to put new tyres on the back on an ordinary fwd is that if they didn’t, they’d probably never change them. The fronts wear out as they do all the work, the rears just follow so put new on the back, move the old rears forward. |

As I understand it, with the worse tyres on the front, the driver will 'feel' them losing traction and has a chance to correct it. If fitted on the rear, when they lose traction it's generally too late to correct for the average driver. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
