Rear fog light, one or two?

Only have an operating offside rear fog light, are there meant to be two? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

By law only one is required ...... OSR

That doesn't mean to say manufactures can stop at one.

I have 2 on my FL2 09 Reg

There are so very few cars that are fitted with two fog lights, but all six of my Land Rovers have been fitted with a pair of them. It’s a sign of a proper car! Thumbs Up Very Happy

Fortunately, nearly all of the generic cars out there just have one, which is great, as it seems quite a few generic car drivers struggle to know when to turn them off and can’t be trusted with having one, let alone two! Rolling Eyes Wink

Not all, but many, of vehicles out there are designed to have a set of symmetrical rear lamp clusters. The OSR having, by law a fog lamp and the NSR having a reversing lamp.
The better designed vehicles have both.

In the past I drove German manufactured vehicles (for my company), their market being EU and UK, they would design rear lamp clusters to look symmetrical from the outside but not populate the internal bulb assembly with either a bulb or the wiring in the harness. Many a vehicle I drilled out the 'bung' in the reflector cluster, fitted a bulb and link a wire, in order to have two fog lamps.

Off Topic, Only last week I was driving in a town, where it was foggy, all vehicles had rear lamps and fog lamps 'on' ......... but a police car ??? I followed the police car until it stopped, at which point I called to the police women driver and explained her vehicle had NO lit lamps to the rear, at all !. She was most surprised and confirmed she had forgotten to turn them on !!

Many cars have "auto-lights" causing drivers to stop thinking about their lights. Unfortunately some auto-lights seem to react poorly to foggy conditions. Jules

I read that, as well as the fact that modern vehicles have the dashboard permanently lit, thus fooling drivers into thinking that their lights have actually come on, when in fact they haven't for the reason described above.

It would be better (and safer) if the clocks didn't light up until the lights were actually on...just like they used to! One step forward, two back as usual....

Having 2 rear fog lamps is also very useful to deter tailgaters. Flicking them on briefly makes them drop back, thinking you're braking.

So had nsr light cluster out today. No power going to fog light, bulb present and appears fine, filament intact. Is there a separate fuse for both rear fog lights? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Not a fused system I think. Can’t tell you how to reset it, there will be something buried on here somewhere. Yes they have 2 rear fogs, just checked all my lights as mot due. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
