Nissan has not yet announced its reasons for cancelling X-Trail Sunderland but until it formally make its reasons clear, blaming Brexit is pure speculation. Certainly now is a good time to break the news though... just another bit of bad news for project fear to add to its oft times ridiculous catalogues of disaster we will be facing.

With Sunderland about at capacity with Qashqai and with plummeting diesel sales freeing up capacity elsewhere, why would Nissan want to invest £m's in Sunderland? Makes poor business sense on the face of it.

It looks as if our future car manufacturing is taking a knock.

It may be that until our hourly rate of pay falls below that of the Far East we will continue to loose actual and potential jobs.

Groundhog Day was yesterday as Large Red quite correctly said, but I was referring to the film.

In it the main character just wakes up each day, to find himself back at the start of the previous day and has to repeat his actions over and over again. Although, in the film, he eventually escapes by doing slightly different things each day, each time learning by his mistakes from the previous day.

Now I've explained that, I will have a go of explaining where we are regarding Brexit.

The chaos within our government, and the lack of any planning by the people responsible for this mess, is enough to put anybody off trusting our country as a place to invest in.

Brexit itself is not the problem, if the original plotters had a plan, where are they now, and please can they tell us what the plan is, or was.

I'm sorry if it worries me, but I've seen it all before, in the 1980's, when ideology forced through deregulation, which effectively allowed people to liquidate the assets of our (manufacturing) industry.

Probably the 18 year old commercial trainee made the decision, it goes something like this ,

1) 80% of the production will be LHD and there is a strong chance that exporting it will be hit by 10% tariff under WTO , but the no one in the U.K. will clarify what the strategy is

2) the 20% that the U.K. want can be catered for from the Japanese plant , the steering wheel is even on the same side .

3) after Brexit there is a strong chance that a U.K. / Japan trade deal will mean zero Tariffs on the car made in Japan going to U.K. .

4) We can lose the transport costs “in smoke and mirrors” finance deals and promotions .

5 ) Hmm and we can keep half a zillion yen of cash too , and let our partners Renault build the LHD car , Macron san will probably open the new line with his strangely beguiling , bicycle riding , older woman .....

There may be other reasons, the X Trail not only looks like a Qashqai, but shares engines an 4x4 system, possibly the only difference is that the X-Trail has a 2 litre engine option in diesel, perhaps there is no demand. Renault has a majority shareholding and thus so does the French government at arms length in Renault despite EU regulations. I have a few times resisted the urge to comment on here about Brexit issues, as this is the place I come for my regular Freelander related "fix". however some earlier posts need replying to. There are a few rather "glib" comments from some posters who seem to be making light of what is in fact a very serious issue which will likely affect a lot of families, not to mention the economy of the area and the UK as a whole

I have to say that the only Nissan comment I have seen recently regarding this recent announcement was this.........…

Which is just a statement of fact, hardly blaming the entire decision on Brexit The UK's status post Brexit is still a total unknown, so no business is going to invest massively when there is so much uncertainty.

We have seen a large number of major business leaders warning of the consequences of Brexit and in particular a "no deal" Brexit who have been derided by brexiteers who all seem to know more about how to run those businesses than the businesses themselves. What is so sad is that those industries under threat are like Nissan or maybe Airbus where the jobs are in engineering, highly skilled, well paid and with good training and conditions of employment. I realise that there are currently high levels of employment in the UK but wonder whether many of these are part time, lower paid and "gig economy" type jobs

One other issue which could have affected the Nissan decision is the fact that there is a new Trade Agreement agreed between Japan and EU which is about to come into effect. Unfortunately the UK will not be part of that post Brexit

I heard Jacob Reece-Mogg interviewed yesterday trying to discredit the Nissan Management and attacking the BBC reporter for bias. "Don't shoot the messenger" comes to mind
