Hi guys had a nightmare day yesterday was stuck in a car park for hours after getting the steering column locked message lots of clicking from the fuse box in the passenger footwell the gauges going erratic one I saw was temp gauge go from zero to max. Got it recovered to home and it’s now stuck on the road. A few questions the steering wasn’t actually locked it was heavy but moveable does the software thing from an indie disable the lock and all is good ? I’ve been reading through the many posts about this problem and will try the tips I’ve picked up but suspect they aren’t going to work just a feeling I have. The RAC guy cleared all codes did the hard reset etc and said it’s either the steering lock or the thing in the footwell can’t remember exactly what he said to be honest I had been there hours and was suffering with pain. One more thing the RAC man turned up with his van sounding like a bag of spanner’s you couldn’t make it up and when he’d given up on the Landy he said if his van wasn’t playing up he would have towed me home,I said but it’s auto ? He got the laptop out and said no look it says here a solid tow no more than 10 miles at no more than 25mph is fine,so that left me waiting for another 2 and a half hours for the recovery guy, when I told him about the tow he said in no uncertain terms towing it would have ruined the gearbox, any ideas to any of the above greatly appreciated. Oh yes it was quite a saga getting the car on and off the truck. |

Sorry to hear about your experience yesterday, the indie told me he was going to switch steering column lock off with a view to fiting a new lock in a couple of weeks, I said not bothered about steering lock so he disabled it and then disconnected it,touch wood no issues so far.I also had issues with recovery as said it was on my drive and recovery guy said he wasn't told that by my insurance company and he couldn't touch it,I offered to help etc but definite no recovery from him...had to ring insurance company again and another guy came out and recovered it off my drive and said other recovery firm at known for only doing job's they feel like doing as they get paid just to attend.... |

Handbook says:
This applies to both auto and manual transmissions. If the car can be started and moved there's also a procedure (involving accelerating to 5mph 4 or 5 times) which will allow another 50 miles of towing. So according to the book both recovery men were being over-cautious. |

Update, car is now working it was the electronic steering lock after trying to get it off it started working,it’s going in to the guys workshop at the weekend when the switch will come off and be cleaned out greased up etc,the mechanic says he would have confidence in it after that. I trust his judgement he seems really competent at what he does,he says he hates Land Rovers, the RAC man said he did so did the first mechanic to look at it 😳 Apparently the shear bolts are 8 quidish each and a new switch 250 ish. |

That happened to me when I had mine, in Sainsburys car park. I was all ready to call the RAC out and was wondering how they would get it on a trailer to remove it when I tried the gear-lever to see if it would come out of park as the steering was on full lock. Anyway, I wiggled the gear lever and ...click.. the steering released - I might have also wiggled the wheel at the same time with the ignition on, I cant remember exactly but I do remember hearing the satisfying click and the rest of the dash lighting up. Foot on brake, press the button and I was away. Had the car for at least 18 months after that before I sold it and it never happened again. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hi All Bit late to the post, but had similar problems today... So thought I would share the update. Went to start turned over couple of times then nothing, lots of clicking noises from relays, info module (centre dash) flashing lines, relay clicking under centre console near handbrake.... 'Err in doors' said it has been doing a bit more often lately, but was fine with me.... Suspected battery so tested voltage 11.9v, low, put on trickle charge (4 hours) and eventually came up to 12.7v OK! (13.9 on Starter Load) so all good. Still no luck, steering lock issue... aaarghh. Think Old school so thought I'd take off battery terminals, thoroughly cleaned all the connectors and the terminals which seemed greasy or damp.... ummmm refitted and tightened nuts. Turned Steering Wheel as far as I could to the right (Half a turn) BINGO started 2nd turn.... And no warning lights too... Will fit the 'extra earth lead' at the weekend as I suspect there is some voltage leakage, hence why battery was running down gradually, maybe battery is starting to go, is 10 years old, original as far as I can see... Alternator output all good at 14-15v..... Will keep you posted on the next week or so... with any issues |
