Recovery Firm ?

I have been taking recovery and road side assistance (plus travel Insurance) via my bank perks for a small fee each month and no longer feel its offering me value for money. I am probably to close the account and save on the fee but will then need to source some recovery type insurance so whats the best deal and I realise cheap may not be so good if you get poor service.

So who are the best ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi Bob , I still get the Bank deal ( AA via lloyds but the excess travel insurance payments for my arythmia are making it borderline )

. I’ve sorted out the AA for a single lady family member . The smart phone App( not available to the packaged bank product ) is very impressive , ( especially for Females ) . You can instantly report a breakdown on the App . I was with her actually when the battery conked on her Clio . ,

There is a location facility , real time tracking of the van attending , and the guy phones to let you know he is 10 minutes away the response was very professional .

. They also , like all good services, will offer priority to lone female drivers . Like all these bloody services though after year 1 expect to haggle . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto .

I took out Green Flag cover last year, everything included except foreign travel for around £90 and there is an app like the AA one where you can report a breakdown and it sends your exact location to them. Obviously you need mobile coverage for it work but that would be the same if you just trying to call them.

I was the same as you, just used my bank account cover and LR assist if needed, but I no longer have a LR Approved car and my bank cover has reduced to next to useless for me.

I use AA, it is expensive, but over the years have taken care of anything I have thrown at them.

Including
Finding me, locating and replacing a generator (yes 12v generator) on a Bedford CF Motor Caravan, at a remote location next to a Scottish Loch. (pre mobile phones and GPS)
Recovering the same Motor Caravan and returning both it and us about 100 miles to home. Impressive, powerful, dual cab, flat bed lorry, my Motorhome had never travelled so fast.
Recovering Dolomite Sprint, storing it and taking it to garage near home when they opened. This was after its engine blew up after the head released all the water. A characteristic of the sprint. Expensive!
Plus many other times my quick poke under the bonnet failed to get me going.

For me they have always got to me on time and then sorted out my problem or recovered me home.

PS In case you don't know, the patrolman no longer stands next to his motorbike and sidecar and salutes as you pass.
Sadly missed, but I have learned to live with the change. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Bob
I have been using this company for the past 10 years - have had my money worth many times over. The joys of Alfa ownership. Only £48 per year - has always got me home or repaired on the side of the road.

Scotland

I've got personal cover via my policy with LV, think it cost me around £84 per year.

For that, it covers me and mrs ronp for the FL2, Juke, motorhome and my little runaround.
But also gives cover in any other vehicle that we're travelling in, whether as a driver or passenger. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

Alfa 156 - Fuel Pump let go on M1 on the way to my wedding - perhaps it was telling me something.
Back of a lorry from Hull to Southampton - Crank sensor - made the car cut out - went to 2 garages and said it was the fuel pump- sold as scrap to a mate - and he fixed it for less than a £5. Told the garage that they were a bunch of tXXts for not testing the sensor even though I told them it was the sensor.

Alfa GT - Many times would drop into limp mode and then stop.
Turbo pressure issues. Suspension complete front replaced and after 20K needed doing again.

And then there is the weak as hell suspension - incredibly complex - had the anti roll bar replaced - thought it would be an easy job like my MG midget - - many many £££ later slight knocking fixed. great when working but after 5 years of UK pot holed roads will kill most Alfa suspensions.

You’re Lucky , the crank went on my 156 sport waggon , punched a hole in the back of the block . After the new engine was fitted they forgot to put the nut back on the steering arm, it dropped off as I was exiting the A1 . The gearbox lasted about 30,000 before it ate its internals . We had about 10 on the company fleet and 4 destroyed themselves . They were only on our choice list for about 18 months . Having said that when they were going they were mint Razz 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Since ADAC no longer offered their services to UK residents, I switched to Driver Guardian; £65 for full UK cover, £75 for full Europe.
Their reviews are very good although thankfully not had to use them.
