Help lumpy on start up black grey smoke

Hi guys well this fault is driving me mad every time car started from cold its lump and you have to hold revs up to clear and then ok for rest of day its not injection side all new well to be honest nearly every thing has been changed pointing towards glow plug side. not the glow plugs or loom as tested them and have checked and they come on stay on and go off after sort of 10 second but there not comingon pre cranking so like this morning -5 and it didmt show glow plug light and say wait and then start it just started cranking. ive checked water temprature sensor seems ok running out of idea this was a fault before the cold had it for a while just tried every thign and spent fortunes on it and coming to an loss of what to do now has any one else had this problem almost like it gets diesel injector drip ovver night then over fueld next morning but had the four brandnew bosch injectors tested and all fine.. also no faults on diagnostic side HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you say you have checked the glow plugs have you removed them and tested them on a battery or removed them and reconnected the wiring to see what happens during the start up sequence? The glow plug light on the Freelander 2 is not a reliable indicator of glow plug operation as it very seldom comes on during glow plug activation.

Yes had them out tested checked wiring loom checked power out of relay glow plug light not come on for a year but it’s glowing up but. Never prior to cranking even when -5 only as it cranks and then for first 10 seconds

When you checked the glow plugs how long did they take to get hot? Did they glow orange at least half the length of the electrode?

Is the starter motor working 100%. Just someone else had starting problems and renewed glow plugs etc but turned out to be the starter motor. Something worth checking perhaps?.

Disconnect the loom from each glow plug, check with a meter on Ohms from the +ve connector on the top of the plug to any earth, meter should read about 2 Ohms but certainly less than 5 Ohms, anything higher the glow plug is duff. You need to disconnect each one as measuring when connected will read the resistance of the most serviceable plug, though it may be worth while as if the resistance is higher than 5 Ohms they are all knackered Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

looking at your other post you say you've changed the injectors? just wondering if you got one leaking out into the cylinder causing the initial lumpy running?
