Haldex making wheels judder...

Hi folks

My 2010 FL2 has a judder from rear wheels when tight cornering at low speed. There is no noise coming from the diff area.

After reading various threads I removed the fb6 fuse and hey preston no more juddering!

What can I do next? does servicing/changing/flushing oil help? Any guide on this?

If you can get to visit this guy you would get a good service / repair at a fair price. Otherwise its what you have locally to do you a Haldex service. Service parts and oil are available from several places to include Bell.

They are sadly quite far from me!

Is there a guide on how to remove unit and service?

Tried the search but cant find anything on unit removal.

If I understand correctly the Haldex couples the rear diff to the prop shaft. Whether it is coupled or not, how can it make the rear wheels judder since the rear diff should still operate as required?

Download the free "workshop manual" (search for it) - its all in there - the Haldex is called a "On Demand Coupling".

What you are looking at is, depending upon the age of the vehicle, removing (or not removing) the Haldex unit to replace the replaceable filter, clean the non-replaceable filter (in the pump) and refill with new Haldex oil - the earlier the vehicle the easier it is. The problem is access; on mine (late 2014 plate) I had to remove the exhaust pipe, disconnect the prop shaft before removing the Haldex and even then I could not get access to the pump filter unless I made a tool to get the massive drive flange off which I simply did not have time to do (bad planning on my part) Jules

The rear diff only caters for differences in the path between the rear wheels.

The Fl2 is normally front wheel drive and only becomes 4WD when the Haldex locks up when wheel slip is detected by the rotation sensors.

In tight turns the front wheels follow a very different path to the rear wheels. So if the Haldex is stuck on the FL2 is now permanent 4WD without a centre differential. On tarmac, without some slippage between the propshaft and rear diff you get transmission wind up if the Haldex is stuck on - eventually the tyres start skipping. When on loose ground the tyres can skip easily so you dont notice it.

In the pre-Haldex days with permanent 4WD vehicle like the D1 and D2 you had a centre differential between front diff and rear diff - you could lock this up if the ground was slippery but it caused the tyres to skip if on tarmac and thus was only for off road use.

I serviced the Haldex on my 2012 Evoque - should be the same as your FL2 depending on the year. Perhaps a new filter, oil and clean out of the pump filter will cure your troubles?

Members have done them and even done some reporting back. Not the ideal of time of year now though.

Seriously if you make a trip to Bell into a short break it could / would be worthwhile, I went all the way from Yorkshire, the village is nice for B&B, beers and curry as well. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Well worth the distance you need to travel, you will get peace of mind knowing this has been sorted properly.


I speak from my own experience of a visit (with me Jack Russell) to Austen's place.

I will see if I can get there, at least taking the fuse out has cured it for now.

I am a DIY nut so part of me feels the urge to accomplish doing it!

Trust me & others it will be the best 150 quid you've spent on your FL2

And I am also keen on getting the sockets & spanners out and getting stuck in on my FL2 when it needs it, but unless you access to 4 post lift you would soon regret having a go at this (I'm not saying not possible as others have stated, but just bloody awkward).

I do all my servicing & discs/pads etc. But to quote Clint "a man has got to know his limitations"
