No spare key

Hi,

I’m new to the forum and my FL2 so sorry if I am asking an old or stupid question. When I bought the car I only got 1 key fob, there isn’t a problem with it but it seems like they can pack up so I was wondering how easy or expensive is it to get a spare cut / programmed?

Thanks for any help. Thumbs Up

What do Land Rover say ? If I knew I am not sure I would tell the world how to get spare car keys sorted but Ebay may have something on offer. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi Yorky Bob,

To be honest I haven't spoken to any dealers as yet, I thought I would try the experts first, i.e you lot. Very Happy

You need to get a new key and then get it coded to your car.

I've just done this very thing and wanted a genuine key.

I got 2 dealer quotes both at £260 and managed to find an independent who did it for £187 (New genuine key and coding).

I could have shopped around more and got it done for about £150 but had about 4 things go wrong at once and just wanted to get the car sorted out ! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

You should also remember that this could mean that there is a key around that could be used to open and drive away your car that you are not in control of. My understanding is that whoever does the coding is actually telling the car which keys to react to so will be able to disable the missing keys access.

Thanks for that Pedro, that is exactly what I was asking.

Looks like there is no cheap option.

Thanks again

Ive seen something which says that when a key is coded it clears down all other keys linked to the car, so I guess that you need to have the new and old key recoded at the same time as the original will stop working?? Rolling Eyes

A local mobile locksmith can probably do you a new key programmed for around £120 or so but it would not be a genuine key but that should not be a problem. They will cut a new blade and program your original key as well in that price so that removes the issue of anyone being able to use the other original key to steal your car. That will allow you to send off the other key and get it refurbished and get a new battery fitted if it needs it. There is a member on here that refurbs keys(but is giving up soon)or plenty of Ebay sellers offering the service. There was a recent thread about it. Its still expensive at £120 but much cheaper than having to sort it out if you lost your only key or it stops working and you don`t have a spare. There is not any point in buying a spare key from Ebay as you will still need to get it programmed and anyone who does program keys probably won`t program a key that you have bought elsewhere. Good luck!

This is very useful info with some good points raised. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Hi dondiddy,

Thank you very much for this. I'll start to shop around as I don't want to leave it until it packs in or gets lost.

Cheers Thumbs Up

I was in the same boat as you when I bought my Freelander a couple of years ago as I had only one key and the promised 2nd key from the dealer never happened. I did a search on the internet and a local company came out on a Saturday morning and did it all in about 15mins or so. Cost £120.
As I remember there was someone on ebay offering a key and programming for £99 in and around Newcastle at the time . It was too far away for me (and you)I think but if you shop around you may find a similar price. I had phoned a local independent Land Rover garage and they told me that only a main dealer could do it which would have been ever more costly had I believed them ! No issues what so ever with the replacement key being a pattern part! A spare key and a spare wheel are my 2 must haves especially the number of times I have misplaced my car keys! (always found them in the end but when you are in a hurry it`s good to have a spare set!) Thumbs Up

Yes, I forgot to say that the prices I quoted above did not include getting a new blade cut as I still had my old blade from my faulty key. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
