The plate is still supposed to be of a certain size Common sense isn't very common.

So that the vehicle registration number can be clearly read by both humans and machines. If you have to work out what you are looking at it is unlikely that in the heat of the moment of an incident you would remember the registration number you were looking at. If you use the regulation font and size there would be very little deciphering to do as it is very plain.

I've had this Reg. number, 47 years, and up until 5 years I used to make my own plates.

Completely different in Australia, NSW at least. Number plates must be supplied by the registering body, the RMS in NSW, you can't make your own. Even bike rack plates must be their officially manufactured ones. A lot of people hastily mock up a plate for the bike rack so they won't get booked for obscuring the car plate not realizing it's illegal to do so. It's also a big deal if you lose a plate which often happens on a water crossing. |
