if you have a tow bar there are lots that can be fitted to it. Common sense isn't very common.

Fit a tow bar and rack. saves tail gate damage and a bad back if roof rails rack used. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

umm, don't think I would trust one that clamps on the bodywork. Common sense isn't very common.

As Yorkybob said, fit a towball and get a rack that attaches to it. You can even get versions that tilt out of the way so that you can access the tailgate and the bike(s) will be safe and secure as will your freelies paintwork.

Whilst I appreciate this is an old thread that I am reviving, I was hoping for some advice from some of you regarding a bike carrier, given the useless idiot in Halfords that I spoke with this morning who simply said that there was nothing available (which I find very hard to believe)

I am looking for a rear boot-mounted 2 bike carrier, to fit on my Freelander. I am not interested in a towbar mounted one, as I don't have a towbar and don't want the bumper cut away. I also have a rear spoiler at the top of the tailgate, so it would need to accommodate this as well.

Can anyone help point me in the right direction? There are numerous topics on this forum that I have found through the search function, but I cannot see a definitive answer anywhere where the solution offered based on my requirements is still available to purchase.

Any help would be appreciated.

You do not need to cut the bumper to fit a towbar on the FL2
I'd ask Thule what they have as they make quality accessories

Been in the same position. There genuinely are no proper rear mounted ones that I've come across. I bought a couple and depending on how you fitted them, they were either low enough to not affect the boot handle, but then they mostly covered the reg plate, or they were really high and put a lot of weight on the boot handle. This wasn't even taking into account that they both restricted the rear wiper so you'd damage the motor if you tried using it.

If you need to carry bikes any further than just up the road once or twice a year, get a tow bar. You don't need the bumper cut if you choose the right one (various websites out there will tell you what will and won't need a cut).

Then you can get a decent secure bike carrier with running board.

More costly, but it's done proper. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Thanks both. I had heard that a Saris Bones would do the job for short trips, but then that information was contradicted elsewhere, so it's very confusing. What doesn't help is that some of the posts on here regarding a potential solution are so old, that either the product is now obsolete, or it was being mooted when the FL didn't have the chrome boot handle and had the shorter one..I daresay things might have fitted then.

I will continue in my quest for a solution to this without going down the towbar route - it's simply an expense that I cannot be bothered with for the light use that the bikes will only ever get. If anyone else knows of anything, please feel free to update me.

After having had a number of bike racks on other cars and finally trying a towball mounted rack, when I got my current FL2 a tow ball rack was a no brainer. You are unlikely to find anything that hangs off the tailgate that the spoiler doesn’t get in the way of as most if not all need to hang off hooks that go over the top edge of the tailgate even if only to steady the rack and it’s load. The ease of fitting the rack and that it already has a trailer board mounted saves so much time and the only straps involved secure the bikes to the rack. No bodywork contact at all.
