HB3 headlight bulb conversion; halogen to LED?

Ive been looking at HB3 headlight bulbs as mine have blown yet again.

Seen several LED conversions on Amazon

eg https://www.amazon.co.uk/Headlight-Bulbs-C...=hb3+bulbs

They seem a lot cheaper (approx £20) than uprated halolgens and very easy to install (assuming they fit inside the light housing)

Has anyone had experience of these halogen HB3 to LED headlight conversions ? Jules

The problem with conversion to LED lamp is that they aren't legal on UK roads. They aren't E rated and the light output is terrible, usually focused on all the wrong areas and seldom meeting the lumens output rating. There was a recent article in LRO where Wipac showed the differences in performance between bad LED lamps and LED designed headlamps.

I'm yet to see any of these cheap Chinese brand lamps show a temperature output map against a standard bulb. Philips do some excellent LED lamps, with temperature comparisons and back to back optical pattern comparisons, but they are £150+ with a lot of clones about.

There are a lot of cars on the road with LED lamps that sick out like a sore thumb. I regularly see an R reg fiesta with bright white lights that point mostly at the sky, and many more on the motorway that certainly don't point at the road ahead.

But I'm really interested in getting LED lamps in my other car as the light out put really is horrendous (90's Italian wiring harness in a French car). It seems odd that you can't change the lamps in an existing headlight, but fitting an LED light bar to the roof and doing no alignment is just fine.

Thanks Vanny.

My old BMW 3 series used halogen bulbs to run the DRLs. I converted them to LEDs and that was fine but very different to replacing the headlights though.

I guess Im just going to have to put bulbs changes down with the annual service costs Sad Jules

Jules they stuck the above in mine AFTER resistor fix and excellent light and so far so good.

Thumbs Up If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Hell of a lot brighter and very white light, been in a while now but that's probably jinxed it Wink If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Did a google search but I've not been able to source the resistor mod part no LR081691 (corrected in edit) (you need two obviously).

Have PM'd Dan at JLR

Will have to wait and see if its still available. Jules

Just had a reply from JLR.

The "Resistor Fix" LR081681 is no longer available.

Is it possible to make a resistor fix ? Jules

I did an LED conversion over December because changing halogens every 45-60days became old!
Purchased this: https://www.banggood.com/LED-Headlight-Kit...rehouse=CN

It fits tightly in the light housing. The beam spread is way to high, and carries no distance. Close up it is very white and bright. At 12v 3A, only 36 watts!
I wish I could manipulate the focus to get a better beam.

Oh well Big Cry

Hoping for a nice LED bulb to come along.

Note: the part Number is LR 081691, not LR o81691 - a zero after 'LR' rather than the letter 'o'.
