Why doesn't snow stick to a cocker spaniels fur?

Took my parents dog out for a walk earlier, as i am looking after him whilst they holiday in the Dominican Republic

Now the last dog i took out in the snow was a Miniature schnauzer and it ended up looking like a snowball

We was out for about an hour, me nice and warm in my snowboarding jacket and trousers, Frodo in his normal fur coat, as you would expect for a dog Whistle

Got back to the house and i then noticed he didn't have a snowball on him at all, not a single hair with anything like a clot of snow

How strange, are the cocker spaniels a breed where snow doesn't stick, like a husky, you don't see huskey's with snow ball fur either Question Question Question Question Question Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

My now departed and much missed springer spaniel was just the same. He used to go mental in the snow, rolling in it and jumping into drifts the last time we had deep ones. Perhaps it is something to do with their fur being fairly waterproof too . Ours would also regularly go for a dip in our pond and though his outer fur was wet, the layers underneath were pretty dry.

His long fur did used to attract woodshavings when he came to 'help' me in my workshop. Then they all fell off again when he went back in the house. That used to make me very popular. He who dies with the most tools wins!

Frodo's fur is exactly the same as you describe

I guess its to do with the hunting type breed, needs to have waterproof fur to keep warm wilst collecting their owners spoils at the shoot (not that frodo would do that, unless it was a shot squeeking pig)

It funny how the small things get you pondering and a FL2 forum provides the answers Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Here goes ...

We have two mutts .... thats why we have the dog crate and all the associated problems ... see thread about new car...

Mutt 1 ... actually not a mutt but a fairly expensive Westie, well she's as white as the driven snow anyway!! If she's out in the snow for any amount of time she will accumulate a few snowflakes on her coat, but she'll always shake before coming inside ... hey presto all snow gone.

Mutt 2 ... actually a real mutt (supposed to be first cross Westie/Yorkie) he just moves so quickly that snowflakes don't stick !!! Stornoway Grey GS ... What a fine motor Smile ... but not any more ... Big Cry ... psst look at my gallery!
Company cars ... a thing of the past - May 2013.
