Minimum amount of oil to run?

I received 10L of oil in the service kit I ordered. I am thinking of draining the oil, adding 3L letting it run for 10 minutes then draining again, then changing the filter and refilling with the correct amount - around 5-6 L I guess.

This would help to flush the oil oil out, but is 3L enough to submerge the oil feed in the sump? Don’t want to add more than I have to, but don’t want Toruń the engine dry.

1.5 litres difference between min & max on the diesel dipstick. Unless you do a long drain & then a double oil change I really don't see the point, diesel oil will go black very quickly.

If you’re bothered, get a can of engine flush from your local motor factors (or Halfords), use as directed, get the engine really hot and drain for as long as you can. I don’t usually bother with the flush at work but draining the oil is the first thing I do on a service (you can go round checking the lights, washers etc while the engine is warming) and filling with oil is the last thing I do - that gives you a clean oil on the dipstick, for a while anyway! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Get to normal temp and remove / change oil filter every year / 12,000 miles and drain oil every 6 months / 6,000 miles. Use correct grade of quality oil and engine should go on for years to come with no need to flush. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Change the oil and filter regularly and the engine should last 250k+
Flushing disturbs sediment that has found a nice crevice and now is floating around waiting to block a nice small oil gally ..... why would you? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Thanks for the comments

I flushed it anyway as it was well overdue a change. I added about 4 litres and drove for 10 miles, drained, changed the filter then refilled. The oil coming out second time around was also completely black, so I think there must have been some still in. The filter was a real pain, I had to use all my strength to free it although I managed it without taking any of he lower bumper off.

Also got caught out by the fuel filter, had to make a makeshift bleeder using my tent inflator and an old dishwasher hose.

Thanks, that’s a pretty comprehensive guide!

Is there an index or contents page? Couldn’t see anything, though was trying to read on an iPad
