Thanks for posting, interesting bit of history.
Was this level of sophistication common at the time in small 4x4s? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

No, The FL1 had many unique features for a small SUV (the market at the time was quite small unlike now).
We had three FL1s - the dropping rear window was really useful for carrying long things. The HDC was allowed only one descent speed (unlike the FL2 variable speed control) and was a bit too fast at times.

I had 2 trips to Eastnor after the FL1 first came and got to try their Defender, Disco 2, FL1 and RR. A couple of FL1s got broken - the rear valance getting caught on ramp ups. and stuck due to their inherent lower clearance. I had a Disco2 in those days and had done a bit of off-roading and the demonstrators were happy for us to give the vehicles some welly. Not sure if they do that now.

Happy Days...

(only thing they got wrong was the photo of the 'Original Freelander 1997' [top right corner] is actually the V6 petrol model which didn't come out until 2001 ) Sad

Recently came across this article. Make of it what you will ?

I have owned many FL1's and do NOT agree with the report's findings.

Page 55, last paragraph is interesting, considering this report was published in 2016.

I don't think he likes the car Laughing however most of the points he picks up are caused by bad or non existent servicing, whether or not it is based on a Honda Civic I don't know, certainly early prototypes were based in the Maestro van, whether they are that bad, I think not, they are very popular out here where the FL2 is almost non existent my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

This is certainly a biased report. I owned three FL1 and the first was a petrol 1.8 which blew a gasket but the later ones were BMW based (one auto and one manual) and were a totally different car both mechanically and electrically and never missed a beat. I still think that it looks more like a proper 4x4 than an FL2 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE
