United Kingdom

Just had a Censored in a vectra nearly take out the front of my office, small car parking space, with slight slope (same slope my car slid on without me in it last time it snowed)

Decided to turn round, way too much speed, went straight, then tried to reverse back up, loads of revs and wheels spinning Rolling Eyes

Wasn't getting anywhere, bloke came and started pushing him back up the hill, Me and my staff just looked on laughing Laughing

Eventually went outside and told him spinning his wheels will dig a hole in the tarmac on private property and i'll be obliged to claim repair cost off his insurers Twisted Evil But i am not going to push you, but can tow you out with my LR if he had a rope Whistle

2nd bloke in a van decided that the wood in his van might give him more grip, which it did, but 1st pushing bloke had to jump out of a piece of the wood. (I did warn him he shouldn't be stood there)

Anyway he made it out, i did not have to tow him and went back to my nice warm office to wait for the next sucker Twisted Evil Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

That is true, but I've seen people up here abandon their cars in manageable conditions, blocking roads for everyone else - but that's more due to lack of ability than being a softie.
This morning though, I had to be at the airport fairly early and decided to use my usual narrow country road route - mostly one car wide with drystone walls either side. One stretch is 500 yards of down hill, about 1:8, with 2 bends. Talk about arse-clenching. On 2 occasions I genuinely thought I was going into the wall. Shocked Snow mode and HDC on - the car was working overtime but I have road tyres. The road was untreated with 3" of snow on top of ice. I'm not religious but I was praying at one point. I won't be so cocky next time, I can tell you.
I'm now seriously considering winter tyres, even for the few days we get this weather. Cheaper than new panels down one side.

That is what I have been advocating for a while now - an extra set of wheels fitted with PROPER WINTER TYRES will save a lot of money and worry in the long term Thumbs Up 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Do winter tyres work in the summer?

Also, they recon that from 7o and lower is when you should use winter tyres, so for most of December -March these days then, doesn't seem such a short time.

I heard wintertyre are usefull starting below 15C, but I guess there will be some overlapping.

Considering the 7C probably like this

summertyres above 7C
wintertyres below 15C

Change to summers if temp wont go below 7C and winters if not above 15C.

Something like that probably

I believe the rubber compound that is used is completely different on winter tyres and which are designed to work at different temperatures as well as in different conditions. Additionally they each have their unique tread pattern. Winter tyres may work well in winter in low (but not necessarily minus) temperatures in both snow/ice and wet conditions, but at summer temperatures they would be too soft and with the wrong tread pattern and probably dangerous in wet conditions. Winter tyres are not recommended for summer use here for that reason I guess.
Earlier, intermediate (all-weather) tyres were thought by many to be the answer, but these days all the Norwegian motoring organisations and press warn about the use of these outdated and probably potentially dangerous tyres.

I reckon that the max. air temperature that I use winter tyres is about +10C 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Problem is that here in Belgium it can get above +10C then below 0C in only a couple of days. Switching every time is impossible. So winters and summers need some overlap to allow for these changes.

For instance:
on 2008/01/07: -12.8C
on 2008/01/19: +10.1C
That's a diff of 23C in a space of 12 days.
on 2008/01/29: -3.8C
Again quite a diff only 10 das later.

I could not find data for november/december but I think I'll find similar ranges, though it was somewhat warmer so I suspect something like +17C to somewhere near 0C.

We regulary get temperature ranges of 7C to 10C in one single day and last (bad) summer we had temperatures of max only 12C in the daytime.

In my opinion it would be very logical for winters and summers to overlap the +15C to +7C.

Worth investigating I think.

---

Apparently a wintertyre always works fine becouse it's softer. In warmer temperatures they only erode faster.
Winters work best below 7C (as you said) as the low temps make the tyre harder and les erosive, while summer are too hard and loose grip very fast below 7C and expontionally loose grip with even lower temps.

If you can read dutch: http://www.federauto.be/binarydata.aspx?type=doc/Winterbanden.pdf
For all other languages, you probably still will understand the graphs.

So, once you see temps below 7C it's time to switch, even if some warmer days follow.

Found this site very informative on winter (cold weather) tyres. Winter/cold weather tyres are recommended for use below 7 degC

Avoid problems, let the car stand in the car port, take a cab.

That’s the most useful piece of writing and suggestions for UK drivers to read and digest I have ever read in English Thumbs Up .

The benefits of two sets of wheels are undisputable, but if you really only need them very occasionally then do as bjartin says – it is possible to take a cab instead. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
