Hi all,

Yesterday I got an amber “check engine” light on my dash, no message in the info centre. When I plugged in diagnostic device, I got a fault code P0299, which is for turbo system. I noticed that the typical turbo wheeze is different than usual, and also I had a feeling there was a bit of flutter under light acceleration when engine is still cold.
When I checked engine oil level I noticed there was a significant drop - always half way between min and max marks, but now the oil level was at min mark.

Does anyone have the same experience? I will take it to my local garage as soon as they have a free time. Until then, I shouldn’t be driving the car, right?

I really hope it won’t be neccessary to replace whole turbo as this is costly as ***. Lately my Freelander has been very nasty, already had to replace few major components.

Could it be the intercooler or hose?

If these fail the lack of back pressure can cause the turbo problems.
I only ask as I had to replace the left hand intercooler hose and two intercoolers - OK one failed when I drove into a frozen pond and shoved a 2" thick piece of ice through it. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I had this the other week and it was a split in the short hose by the throttle body. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green
Evoque SD4 Auto Blue.
FL1 HSE TD4 Manual Black - Gone.
RR Classic V8 EFI - Gone

I am hoping it is not the turbo. How can I check if it is one of these hoses or intercooler? And what about the engine oil drop?

EDIT: I just spoke to my mechanic. The car is just due for oil change and he said that this oil consumption is normal within this time period. He also confirmed it is safe to drive until next service this week.

Got the car back from garage today.
It was caused by split intercooler hose. Now drives like new.
Not sure if it is connected, but I actually think that this split hose issue was affecting auto gearbox - for the last year or so shifting was not smooth, transmission oil replacement did not help but now when they replaced the hose it is shiftig so much better, the ride is very smooth again.
