What is the limiting factor with the 2000kg towing limit?

Hi everyone.
I'm wondering what is the limiting factor in the towing capacity. The Aussie models have a 350kg tow ball weight limit so I figured it may not be the rear suspension.
So, is the limiting factor the gearbox or the rest of the transmission path. Maybe it is the suspension so would it be possible to tweak the towing limit by upgrading the rear units.
Any thoughts?
cheers

A 25% gradient hill start will be the limiting factor, also if you have a manual reversing the trailer/caravan will eat the clutch like a yank at burger bar.

It may be a combination of things, diff, auto box, transfer box or brakes - don't forget you have to stop 2500kg of car and occupants, 2,000kg of trailer down a steep incline at 60mph, possibly repeatedly. Thinking of when I towed the fully laden car and caravan down a mountain pass - you could smell the brakes from inside the car! Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

If you get over to NSW, Thunderbolts Way is tough on a car without a caravan. It's long, steep & windy, have only done it going up & not in the height of summer either. Just as well there is a lookout just over the top to let the car cool off. Low gear & slow the other way or you will have no brakes left! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

The supplement in my handbook says 250kg if you reduce GVW by 100kg (On-road). Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Thanks everyone.
I was thinking of buying a caravan with an ATM of 1925kg but it's all to close for comfort even with the electric brakes.
Back to the drawing board.
Cheers

You were correct at 350 kg!

I read the towing specs a few more times. The towing supplement is the spec in general. Up to 250 kg!

Printed in the handbook it is up to 350 kg for Australia. But you still have to be within the GVW.

Off road towing is still 750 kg whether braked or unbraked. On-road is 2000 kg, but we do have some seriously rough gazetted roads down under!

The Freelander must be the only car of this size that has 350 kg.

It would be interesting if the DS in Australia is the same? Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
