Hi

Been having power issue (typically at low speed 3rd gear). I thought it was the EGR again - which has happend before- as there is some black smoke etc... (but starts like a dream- engine sounds perfect- and no engine management lights).

However, from a recent service the gargae told me that I have had an oil leak (reckons previous garage dint close the cap properly!) and that Oil has leaked onto the Intercooler. I can see oil deposits in the front grill of the inetrcooler....

Does anyone think that oil in the intercooler could be causing the power issue and is there anyway of cleaning (rather than replacing) the intrecooler? ??

Either way, you can use white spirit (dry cleaning fluid) to clean the intercooler. It has a low boiling point and won't leave a residue like other spirits can. I did this on my Disco a long time ago.

good question- I am not sure as ignorant of the make up of the system... so not sure...but I can definitely see oil in the front grill of the inter cooler so my guess is that its got into it....

Do you think this would give flat spots/power issues (car feels like its pulling back momentarily)?

There’s absolutely no way oil could get into your intercooler just by being on the outside of it as oil under atmospheric pressure would not find its way into a pressurised intercooler. Maybe you have a bit of damage to the intercooler or intercooler hoses (which will give you a loss of power) and the leak could be oil mist/residue being blown out? It’s normal to have a bit of oil coating the inside of the intercooler and not a real problem in itself. Normally though, you'd hear a hissing noise of escaping charged air when you increased the revs. Do you hear that? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

As Steve D has posted above.Check the intercooler for cracks & the hoses for any splits, sounds like that could be your problem. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
