Yes, it was called "Operation Smash Hit" and I remember it well as I was there. I can confirm that the sandwiches Greenpeace referred to were not standard British Rail issue as they were fresh and edible. I can also confirm that the Greenpeace allegations were a load of old cobblers.

I remember a train trip through the glacier national park top right of USA, looking down from train windows you could see a huge grain train that had derailed and fallen way down the hill/mountain side.
