Did a bit more on the plot today - cleared another couple of beds of dreaded weed but then disaster struck. My two-week old £19.99 Wickes spade gave up. The fork gave up last week. They’re going back tomorrow. I don’t expect top quality for that sort of money (there were two cheaper versions in the store) but I should get more than three outings from them digging a vegetable plot over.

Got my money back for the spade and fork after a small argument at Wickes - they wanted to give me replacements but I said no, no, no! Went round my Mums and she had loads in her garden shed that she is never going to use again (has a gardner in nowdays and he has his own tools). Some even still had the tickets on them and seem better quality (not that that’s hard) than the ones I returned? Lifetime guarantee eh? We'll see!

Today I have mostly been digging and I have a blister on the palm of each hand to prove it!

Have you tried the non-digging method. Some people on my old allotments use it successfully and there is a lot going for it especially no digging.

Lol @ 786will
That’s sounds a pretty easy option. I’ll have to look into that. Also, I was looking at seeds today when I bought my garlic bulbs and I saw a pack of something I’ve read about somewhere - green manure. Basically looks like grass as far as I can tell - you sow the seeds, let it grow wild until about three weeks before you want to plant the area when you then just turn it over and it rots down. Anyone used that? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto Present: Audi A3 S Line. |
