Massive oil leak please help

I discovered a big puddle of engine oil and when I removed the underside cover I found this. Is this a common fault?

The oil filter is drenched in oil too but I think this is the problem.

I have no idea what the diesel engine looks like as I have Petrol. Was the oil filter tightened correctly. Have you cleaned up the oil so you can see any possible gaps it may have come out of. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

To me that looks to be coming from between the engine and gearbox so I'd suggest its the crankshaft seal it pretty common on these engine. I had mine replaced when the clutch went. I'd clean it up and keep an eye on it and check the engine oil level regularly.

search "crankshaft seal" ebove

Hi

The photos are inconclusive as to the source of the oil leak. I would suggest that the first step is to clean the contaminated area with a degreasing agent (jizer, gunk etc) or brake cleaner which is also very good for this. Once clean and dry you need to leave the undertray off and place a sheet of cardboard on the floor under the engine then run it stationary until you see the oil drip appear, you will then be in a better position to ascertain the source of the leak. It has to be done stationary as driving it would cause the wind to blow the oil backwards so making it harder to trace the source of the leak. Oil leaks over a certain size are now classed as an MOT failure in the UK. Hope this helps.

It may be nothing but do as above.

If someone tried to change the oil filter from above it could be residue oil floating about. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I thought that the case was cracked but apparently it isn't! I found this picture and it clearly shows what I thought was a crack isn't. Now I took a better look and I think the culprit is either the oil filter or the oil pan as suggested.

This started after I had a front end impact with a few drips here and there then all of a sudden I found a huge puddle of oil in the garage to the extent that when I checked the dipstick it is showing less than the minimum level.

I due for an oil change anyway so I will clean everything add a bit of oil and see where its coming from. If its from the oil pan, is there a gasket from it or some instant gasket would be enough?

Thanks for the help

Looks like the cork seal has split and moved out on the corner on that picture. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

That's just a picture I found online to confirm that what I though was a cracked case on mine is just a grove that's there from factory.

What I need to know is if there is a gasket or seal or anything cause I think the oil is coming from the oil sump

I think the sump is a silicone gasket.

Thanks for all the replies. As suggested I cleaned the oil and left the engine running and noticed the oil coming from the oil filter cap. Quick and easy repair! Just changed the oil filter and o ring and no more oil. Now all I need to clean the garage floor!
