Wales 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Orkney Grey
Gearbox/Transmission noise

I have a 2013.5 Freelander with 28000 miles , owned from new.
There is a whine from the transmission. Worst in 4th at 46mph. It has been there since new but then very slight.
just audible in 5th, not in any other gear.
It has become a good deal louder. Dealer has not been too keen to offer any repair/advice. Warranty is soon up!
Anyone out there experienced the same with a vehicle of that age?
Thanks.

Could be the transfer box or the splined drive that connects the gearbox to it. My auto is showing noise in 2nd/3rd. Booked in next week. See my post "auto box noise in 2nd gear".

Thanks Bob.
Should have stated it is a manual box.

I can see you have a manual box. However, we both have transfer boxes. Wink

Hi, I hope you don’t mind me asking but what was the cause of the whining noise. Mine in whining, worst in 5th. Thank you

It's not just me then...
I also have the exact same observation in my manual 2007 Freelander.

The whine resonates at about 45mph and can be heard most in 4th gear- especially when it's cold.
If I drive on a very smooth tarmacadam highway, I can still hear it in other gears the faster I go. I'm suspecting because the pitch is consistent with road speed that it may be the front transfer box.

I have also noticed just recently that I'm also getting a related noise when I am slowing and downchange from 5th back into 4th (before I even bring the clutch back up) and you can hear a slight 'yelp' from the cogs as the gear is selected.
It only does this between these two gears and only when it is cold.

Im hoping nothing is about to chew itself up in there... It's done 205,000 miles! "We're in danger, we've got to get out."
"What are you talking about?"
"I've been called a ponce."

LRTB - how many miles since the gearbox oil changed ?

I've just changed the ATF on my autobox at 40K miles (5 years old) and the gearbox is noticeably smoother and quieter. I know yours is a manual but good oil does make a difference. Jules

Probably about 40,000.

Got it done just over 3 years ago when I first bought it.
I am under the impression that it's mega miles between scheduled gear oil changes, but perhaps I should get it done again. "We're in danger, we've got to get out."
