What have people found to be the best petrol to use?

I've been using premium here in the states. It's normally 91 octane.

Have you tried regular grade and if so can you tell any performance issues?

I think regular in Australia is 91 octane. Then we have 95 at some places and premium at 98.

I've read that a lot of people are running on Premium 98 and having good results. Think I'll do the same.

I've been running mine on Premium 98 when I can and have noticed the difference in economy and performance. Now that fuel prices have come down, well, relative to where they were mid last year, I think it's worth the extra cost over standard unleaded and even 95.

a little off topic, but a car program "5th Gear" did a test of standard diesel and performance diesel, using the same car, a renault IIRC,

Standard Diesel 155bhp, flushed the system to rid the car of standard diesel, and then did same test on rolling road
Performance diesel 161bhp

Theres no doubt at all! Better Octane will make your car preform better and give you better mileage.

98 all the way for petrol cars.... even my wifes Fiesta gets 98 and runs so much better

I know some people say they get better mpg from higher octane fuel. I used to own a 3.0lt ST220 Mondeo before this car. I tried various types of higher octane fuel and never noticed the difference in performance or mpg. I think it's a con. As i said that's my experience and the only thing I noticed was it cost me more to fill up!!  Gone - TD4 XS Auto, Sumatra Black, Mud flaps and side strips, clear indicators, private plate, privacy glass

My last car was a MkII Audi TT 3.2 V6 (which I still miss very much ). It only ever drank Shell V-Power from day one until the fuel strikes last year when V-Power seemed to disappear from my local garage for a week or so. I was forced to use standard 95-RON and the reduction in performance and mpg was very noticeable.

It seems to me that the degree of benefit depends entirely on the engine regardless of performance or size. TD4, HSE, Santorini Black, SS side protection tubes, clear side repeaters, chrome wing mirror covers

In my previous car, BMW 130i, I only used Shell V-Power/V-Power Racing or BP Ultimate. I'll stick with the 98 Octane stuff, unless I "have to" use something else. Without a doubt it would drive better Furyun.

A cleaner fuel will burn better. I had a XR6T only ran on 98. One day i had to fill up with 95... it ran like the biggest dog for the 50kms to the next BP. Without 98 octane i couldnt run the performance tune in my car. It would have killed it if i drove more than 50kms. Lucky BP was much fewer.

There on in, when i drove into the country towns, i always carried octane boost. Just incase they didnt have 98, i could still use 95, and then add half a bottle of octane boost.

Makes a difference!

The better brand ones, have more octane, which means you use less in the tank.

But you only need to use it if you get stuck where's there's only 95 or 91.

Again off topic but has anyone in Australia tried adding 2 stroke to their diesel fuel as per comments on the UK posts ??

Nope, But if its F's the car it will cost a lot to fix!
