In addition I will be fitting new handbrake cables as my current ones have the plastic cover frayed and rusting! Was an advisory at recent MOT!, |

Shoes should be ok as only hand brake, but check / replace the hand brake actuators as they seize up.

As you are fitting new discs & pads you will need to fit new handbrake shoes as well. I'd be surprised if they were in a fit state to be re-used anyway!

Thanks chaps! I think that as I’m renewing everything the shoes would be best new as well!

My shoes were fine at 75k but a lot of people find that the lining stating to separate from the shoe, new is always best but found shoes to be expensive and as mine were good did not bother.

Cable removal - no, as you could hold the old case to pull, when you get the new cable you will see the spring clip that holds it into the brake back plate. Was told to just pull it out but mine needed more encouragement.

I decided that due to the age and miles on my vehicle I’d renew the lot so now have a new set of rear discs / pads / handbrake shoes and fitting kit! In addition I’m fitting new handbrake cables as the outer caseing has gone on mine and rust is appearing!

Sounds as if the later EHB brakes are much easier to deal with then. Even when new my first FL2 handbrake like yours was rubbish on steep ground. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

My last job in the trade some 35 or so years ago brought me into contact with a lot of American cars and I couldn’t believe how crude the brakes often were. Yank tanks that were fine as long as you drove in a straight line. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

When I had my FL2 and changed the rear discs, pads and shoes, I could do handbrake turns. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
