Rear discs / pads / inner disc hand brake shoes

Hi I have to replace my rear discs and pads on my 2008 FL2 HSE which has done 85K miles. Is it likely that the hand brake shoes will require replaced?
Recommendations of what disc / pads etc to use

Many thanks
Jim

Rear Discs

In addition I will be fitting new handbrake cables as my current ones have the plastic cover frayed and rusting! Was an advisory at recent MOT!,

Shoes should be ok as only hand brake, but check / replace the hand brake actuators as they seize up.
I used all LR parts, when I fitted new hand brake cables I could not get them out of the brake back plate, managed to release the retaining clips by inserting a piece of 1/2" copper pipe down the hole from the wheel side and hitting it.

As you are fitting new discs & pads you will need to fit new handbrake shoes as well. I'd be surprised if they were in a fit state to be re-used anyway!

Two opposing views already, don't you just love it Smile

Richard, I made a tool to help me remove my cables, I had access to a lathe! (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Thanks chaps! I think that as I’m renewing everything the shoes would be best new as well!

Removal of the cables could be a challenge but as I’m replacing would cutting them help?

My shoes were fine at 75k but a lot of people find that the lining stating to separate from the shoe, new is always best but found shoes to be expensive and as mine were good did not bother.
Just remember to bed them in.

Cable removal - no, as you could hold the old case to pull, when you get the new cable you will see the spring clip that holds it into the brake back plate. Was told to just pull it out but mine needed more encouragement.

For my Freelander 2 the brakes say FoMoCo

To the best of my knowledge Volvo also uses a similar braking system

A quick search of the Volvo board shows that when the shoes fail the repair can get expensive

For me personally I bought news shoes for the parking brake

Take a look at this link

Good luck

Paul

Rear brake shoes

I decided that due to the age and miles on my vehicle I’d renew the lot so now have a new set of rear discs / pads / handbrake shoes and fitting kit! In addition I’m fitting new handbrake cables as the outer caseing has gone on mine and rust is appearing!

Thanks for all your advice folks!

Jim

Sounds as if the later EHB brakes are much easier to deal with then. Even when new my first FL2 handbrake like yours was rubbish on steep ground. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Rear

At 85k I did my rears, which was last week.
Near side took a while as I needed three hands to put the clips on that hold the shoes whilst holding the pin through the backplate.
When I did the otherside that part of the operation took two minutes with the help of someone.

The old shoes were fine, but if you fit new discs the inner drum will be unmarked so better to fit new shoes whilst its all apart and have full contact of a clean set.

Having driven it a week I'll be dropping the wheels off again and re adjusting the tension adjuster inside the hub now they have centred properly.

Its a rubbish design!

My last job in the trade some 35 or so years ago brought me into contact with a lot of American cars and I couldn’t believe how crude the brakes often were. Yank tanks that were fine as long as you drove in a straight line. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

When I had my FL2 and changed the rear discs, pads and shoes, I could do handbrake turns. Very Happy Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
