Afraid there's good and bad everywhere. had a bad experience with an indy LR specialist, who knew his stuff but used substandard parts, and some VERY bad experiences with main dealers, but have been very happy with LR approved shops (one in S London and one in Gateshead) and also with my current dealer in Peterborough. I think one thing with main dealers is that they deal almost entirely with newish cars, so once a vehicle is three years old they tend to lose what expertise they had on that model.
