I recall reading once that the army had done a study on cost of maintenance on it's vehicles (probably a lot of LR Defenders) and came to the conclusion that regular maintenance was not cost effective and that apart from oil and filter changes it was cheaper to let something break and then fix it. (this is assuming that you are not fighting a war at the time of course). I then got thinking about my wife's 56 reg Peugeot 207 1.4 petrol which she bought in 2009 and has only just gone over 50k miles has a 20k service interval, I checked the service book and the last time I did an oil change/service was in 2011 !! She only does about 3k miles/year. The only jobs I have done on it have been new discs and pads, replaced rear brake cylinders (seized due to lack of use I guess) and two years ago I replaced the cambelt and rear springs.

Absolutely ridiculous. You'd do a better job yourself using genuine filters for a tenth of the price. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

When you read the servicing schedule and see what they actually do its actually only basic fluids and filters and the rest is check and maybe top up.

and this is why a lot of manufacturers now have online service history as the ONLY way you can get a service history is through them, but they don't like giving out the information due to data protection !

I sold my 14 year old, 165000 mile Td5 Discovery 2 to a private buyer with a thick file of receipts for parts and consumables (mostly fitted by myself). The buyer was delighted, not expecting any history with an old car. Loved and cherished cars are out there and I often think better than those with history from a main dealer.. Just put all the receipts in a lever arch folder. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

What’s the difference between a loved and cherished car to one with a full LR service history? Isn’t it the same thing?

Harsh that in OP to say people have more money than sense as not everyone is gifted in the art of servicing and some ( myself included) are not able bodied enough to carry out servicing.any more Perhaps they see us coming ( limping ) towards them and think"easy money" But what choice have some folk got.? If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

I can't remember why I once had an interest in 20 year old blonds! But it is easier to change the air filter on the car than change the HEPA filter on my vacuum!

Jules, you're correct, but there are also independent mechanics and franchises. These also qualify for your warranty to be maintained. It depends how much you're wiling to pay someone to say "Yep looks good to me". |

YB all Indy's want as much as dealership in £££'s for servicing so may as well stick with them!! Perhaps that's the downside of being out in the sticks.
